5.0 out of 5 stars Kathryn Smith's best novel yet..., February 7, 2005
Reuniting all of the Ryland brothers again, this new enstallment in the 'brother' series is the best to date!

Wynthrope Ryland: dashingly handsome, witty, self-assured, and cocky, is a man who also leads a double life. The aristocratic dandy by day, and the heartless thief by night, not even his beloved brother's know of his mysterious past.

One day while coming out of a shop, Wynthrope catches a glimpse of Moira Tyndale, a lovely, if very private lady. The two exchange eye contact and something unbelievable happens to Wynthrope. He falls in love (although he is unaware of this fact at the time).

He begins to pursue Moira, but the lady is also hiding her own secrets. Unfortunately, Wynthrope's past returns to haunt him, and he must complete one last theft before finally set free of his old life. He must steal a beautiful tiara that belongs to none other than the beautiful Moira Tyndale herself. The tiara is a precious gift from her late husband, Tony. But as the time draws near to pilfer the item, Wynthrope learns that he does have a heart after all...

Moira cannot believe that she has finally trusted a man into her life again, especially because of secrets that could ruin her position in society. Yet she is unexplainably drawn to Wynthrope, even as she begins to see a side of him that he hasn't shown anyone else. Unfortunately, all of their efforts towards a relationship goes by the wayside when she catches him stealing from her, and realizes that she was right to have her suspicions. However, her heart is the one that needs convincing.

Wonderful inner-dialogue, great secondary characters, and a hero that is very believeably conflicted yet passionate. Kathryn Smith has outdone herself once again. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Satisfying Historical Romance, February 28, 2006

Wynthrope Ryland, one of the four Ryland brothers, has never been conventional, but he has been exceptional. In his former secret life, he'd been a master thief - who'd never been caught - though it was a life he'd sooner forget. Now, he only wanted to go forward, making up for his past mistakes and someday prove himself as more than the selfish, unconventional persona he projected.

Lady Moira Tynsdale was chaperoning her younger beautiful sister Minerva when Wynthrope surprised the ton once again by not asking the younger sister, but Lady Moira to dance. Days before, a shared glance told him there was more to the reserved Viscountess than meets the eye and he was determined to uncover the passionate nature he felt she hid. Though she aroused feelings he'd never experienced before, Moira herself was not unaffected and they were came to enjoy a comfortable friendship.

The man who'd led Wynthrope astray came back threatening to expose Wynthrope and ruin his brother who unselfishly sacrificed his own career in order to save him. Not only was he asked to steal once again, the prize was a diamond tiara that belonged to Moira, the woman he had fallen in love with.

Moira had revealed her heart and secrets to Wynthorpe their first time in bed, only to discover him later during that night, in her safe with the tiara in his hands. He was actually putting it back, but the sight was revealing and the damage done. Moira ordered him to leave. Now, Wynthrope would not only have to deal with a blackmailer but try to convince Moira of his innocence, but of what he truly felt in his heart.

*** Oh, what tangled webs we weave... I loved both Wynthrope and Moira! They were complex individuals and the author did a fabulous job chiseling out solid characterizations while building a marvelous love story out of their friendship. The author paints a vivid picture of mood and emotions engaging the reader from page one. Appealing secondary characters (loved Nathaniel) and glimpses of Wynthrope's brothers will have the reader rushing to find the previous books in Smith's Ryland Brothers series as well as looking forward to the concluding book STILL IN MY HEART featuring the eldest brother Brahm. This was a charming and highly satisfying historical romance I fervently recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the Ryland Brothers, December 29, 2005
I didn't read the Ryland brothers series in order. This was the first one I picked up, and it was fantastic. The characters are full, interesting, and come to life. Wynthrope and Moira seem to belong together and have quite an interesting conflict to overcome. Wynthrope, the hero, also has good interactions with his brothers, especially Brahm, and is portrayed as a cocky yet vulnerable man who is easy to like. His flawed past comes back to haunt him and the story keeps you guessing about how it will all work out, almost to the end. Lots of good tension and plot. This book is so good I think you could read it without reading the other ones and still enjoy it. I know that I went back and read the first two books after I read this one, and it stood out on it's own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smith's best to date, June 13, 2005
Terrific book! Wynthrope exceeded every expectation. He's the best Ryand brother yet, though I'm leaving room in my heart for Brahm, who is also beautifully portrayed here. Moira is perfect for Wyn, who feels himself unworthy of love. This is a relationship where the two people really do make the other a better person, bringing out their strengths and giving them the confidence and courage to be themselves. The Ryland brothers' relationship is a beautiful thing here as well. And Wyn's proposal is one of the most romantic I've ever read. I cried as much as Moira. If you read nothing else of Kathryn Smith's read this one. This is one book purchase I'm thrilled with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too sweet!, December 8, 2010

I often don't bother to comment on the books I read but I just had to make a comment about this one. It was simply wonderful! The story definitely surprised me at how sweet and romantic it was.

My heart went out for Wynthrope from the very beginning. Rarely do you get heroes who are instantly smitten with his woman and is aware of it from the start. You see heroes who talk themselves out of it or convince themselves that it was just lust, or that they weren't "capable" of love. All of those did appear in this story, Wynthrope saw himself undeserving of love, convinced himself that he wasn't in love, but we all knew -- that is, Wynthrope, his brother, AND the readers -- all knew that he was in love with Moira at first sight. It was right there.

I have to say that this was too cute and Wynthrope was just the sweetest thing. There was no resisting him. I loved Moira as well. I felt as if I could relate and understand the turmoil she went through. This story was very realistic -- thoughts and feelings wise. The descriptions were believable. I felt as though the characters were real. Their feelings were real.

One thing I want to mention was that this historical gave me a modern vibe - the wonderful gay friend and also the the end. I won't spoil it here, you'll just have to read to find out! This is simply too sweet too pass out!

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Night, January 10, 2007

Kathryn Smith has a knack for coming up with original characters. Winthrope Ryland is the cynical product of a troubled childhood, which he and his brothers helped each other get through. The relationship between the brothers (each brother is unique, instead of being the usual generic "bad boy") is as interesting as the relationship between Winthrope and Moira. Smith has written books about each of the brothers, which I also recommend.
Winthrope and Moira make an involving, "hot" couple who are believable as well as moving. Winthrope's attempts to protect her, while still knowing he has to betray her, kept my attention, in spite of all the other books I have read with seemingly similar plots. This one had a few twists which put it on my shelf with the other "keepers".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous historical romance., December 7, 2004
In 1818 Winthrope Ryland shocks the siblings when he asks the older sister widow Viscountess Moira Tynsdale instead of the younger beauty Minerva Banning to dance. She is stunned, but Minnie comes to her rescue saying she still mourns her Tony, dead two years. Later a shook Moira tells her friend Octavia (Wy's sister-in-law) that she reacted stupidly to his request because no one ever asks her to dance. Later, Wy demands a kiss from Moira but she refuses believing he is using her to get to Minnie.

William Daniels, who conned Wy into stealing for him years ago demands Wy do one last job or else his brother North's political ambitions will be destroyed; William says he has proof that North worked for Bow St. and saved Wy from prison. William wants Wy to steal a tiara from Moira, but after sharing sex with her for the first time, she catches him acturally returning the tiara to her that he already purloined. She orders him to leave though they both are in love. He must deal with the blackmailer if he has any hope of ever having Moira in his arms again that is if he can persuade her that he can be trusted.

The solid cast makes IN THE NIGHT a fine Regency romance. Readers are blessed with a strong lead couple playing sexual chess, the return of Wy's three other brothers and wives of the married duo, and an interesting secondary character who happens to be gay and the heroine's best friend add depth to a fine tale. Though the final confrontation feels somewhat anticlimactic, sub-genre fans will appreciate fabulous historical romance.

I enjoy Kathryn Smith's books, but I thought this was a bit slow at times. I still recommend that you read all of the books in the series; I believe that they are 4 books in all. Thanks!
