My 5-year-old DEMANDED we own this book....,

This review is from: The Night the Scary Beasties Popped Out of My Head (Hardcover)
My son came home from pre-school reciting bits of the book after just one reading and begging to order it for home. The illustrations are wonderful and the language is clever and fun. Now my son wants to write books of his own!As a parent, I would add that if your child has concerns about nightmares, this book is a practical-but-fun story about how kids can control them.

IMAGINATIONS CAN RUN RAMPANT,
This review is from: The Night the Scary Beasties Popped Out of My Head (Hardcover)
Whoa! What's a fellow to do when he's sound asleep then awakened by first a noise then a huge beastie suddenly coming alive right off his sketchpad?
Fortunately, Dan has a magic pencil and the ability to not only tame the demon but erase him. There are laughs and an important lesson to be learned about ridding oneself of things that go bump in the night.

I saw this book go from a thought to the stores and it's one of the most unique children's books ever! Daniel's illustrations are awsome and Dave's writing is brilliant! Way to go, guys. Good photos of the authors, too.

I used this book as a start for an art lesson for first grade. They loved it! The monsters are a little scary though. We had to stress creating beasties that are fun! The book was in great condition. Also, was a great price!

Unfortunately, I didn't discover this book until about last year, so I never got to experience it as a child. However, at the children's museum, I've been pushing this book at random kids, making sure it's displayed in prominent places, offering to read it to them, etc. I think some of them really love it, but some of the older kids have been slightly indifferent. I still absolutely adore it. The story has the coolest illustrations ever. From what I've read, and I could be wrong, but I've heard that in this father-son duo, the child did the illustrations, but some of the more complicated backgrounds (e.g. one that looks like Van Gogh's Starry Night) were done by the father. They are astoundingly complex images, and grab the attention of both children and adults alike. The other thing is the subject matter itself, vanquishing nightmares. But it's done so atypically, telling the child that they can go out there and, well, basically imagine their nightmares away. You've got to love it, and I do personally know many children on whom this strategy would work, without a doubt. Just a fantastic read.

A friend bought this for me years ago before I had kids. At the time I was teaching preschool and this became a quick classroom favorite. My own son is now old enough to appreciate it's greatness and we read it often.

The Night the Scary Beasties Popped Out of my Head,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Night the Scary Beasties Popped Out of My Head (Hardcover)
One night Dan hears a rumbling in his head. The rumbling grows to a deep growl and Dan bolts awake, drawing the beastie from his nightmare so he can erase it and make it go away forever! But before he can, the Beastie gets off the paper and runs away! This is the exceptionally well-written lead from the book, "The Night the Scary Beasties Popped out of my Head." The book uses sloppy, but pleasing-to-the-eye pictures drawn by seven-year-old Dan Kamish. Dan's father, Dave Kamish, textures and colors his sons illustrations. While there isn't really a very sophisticated plot, the pictures and funny vocabulary that the Kamish family uses makes you want to keep reading. This book definitely deserves a 5 out of 5 stars rating and I believe that it is the most hilarious children's book I have ever read!

Daniel & David Kamish have done it! My 6 year old and ten of his friends (holiday gift giving) own and love this book. The illustrations put a funny spin to awful kid nightmares, and who wouldn't give their right arm for a "magic pencil". We can't wait for these two to collaborate on another book!

I had to get this book for my son! As soon as I saw the illustations and read the first page talking about Dan's "melon" I knew it would be a wonderful story. When I got home and read the whole book, it become one of my favorites immediately. I share it with anyone who comes over. It is truly a marvelous book for children with nightmaresÉor without.
