American author Paula Cappa deals with words. She has experience as a journalist for newspapers in New York and Connecticut, a freelance copywriter, editing health, business communications, magazines and news articles, newsletters and advertising copy, but her true love is writing both short stories and novels - that destination for words that satisfies her most. This book, NIGHT SEA JOURNEY was her debut novel and she has continued writing others since the publication of this book in 2012. From reading this isolated example of her talent it seems she has a secure future in her chose field of paranormal supernatural fantasy.

Cappa has that special gift of being able to make the supernatural natural, so polished is her prose and ability to string together ideas and development of same in a sustaining suspenseful manner. Even as she describes supernatural imagery her descriptive sense makes the quasi-visible visible. And that is a talent that will draw even those who are not keen on supernatural stories into her fold. In the instance of this story she places a gifted painter (Kip Livingston by name, and a image creator by trade) in an isolated house (Abasteron House) on Horn Island off Rhode Island. We are lead to believe she lives alone until Cappa informs us of other occupants: `Many know Duma as the angel-prince of dreams, blessed with spiky blond hair and shocking green eyes. The perfection of the universe requires these messengers who, on occasion, assume physical bodies or borrow them from nature.' And there is the ominous firehawk. So even in her prologue she places the supernatural... Nightly Kip is visited by a dark nocturnal creature (the FireHawk) who transports her to terrifying places (the night sea journey of the title).

Paula Cappa has sailed into uncharted waters. Dreams, in many cultures are said to be omens or the visions of the souls desires. Dreams are the playground of the subconscious and susceptible to the influence of the supernatural. The subconscious is the true self Kip finds herself confronting desires, passions and fears that her waking self rarely if ever acknowledges. This is fine as long as the dreams stay dreamland, this story explores the "what if" of that dreamscape overlapping into day to day reality.

A great read, a frightening thought, a book you cannot pass up!

Night Sea Journey is unlike any book I have read before. I have read many books to do with the supernatural and the challenge it presents, but this book is far from straightforward.
The story opens with one of the main characters, a young artist called Kip, asleep in her home Abasteron House, where her dream appears to become a reality.
The story then introduces the other main character, Father Raymond Kera who is confiding in his friend Garcia (the prophet), also a priest, that he is doubting his faith. The two men talk in depth and Garcia tells Raymond about an experience he had concerning a person called Yeshua. His experience bears similarities to Kips dream in that it involved the sea and appeared to be a reality when he woke as he was covered in sand and seawater.
Raymond is sent by Rome to work on Horn Island where he encounters Kip who lives nearby and he becomes involved in her life. Kip is tormented by demons, especially the firehawk, a massive faceless birdlike creature with twelve wings.
Although this book is not exactly scary, it is full of suspense and you have to keep reading to discover the outcome. The author is very descriptive with wonderfully written illustrations of the scenery, the sea, and of course the demons .
This is a must read for any fans of the supernatural.

Night Sea Journey is a joy to read. I'm not familiar with Paula Cappa's work, but judging from this book, her greatest gift is an almost poetic way with words. Her descriptions are so evocative, I sometimes found myself reading them again and saying them aloud, just to hear how it sounds that way.

But that's not her only strength. This is a fast-paced novel filled with clever concepts and interesting characters. On the surface, you could call it a haunted house book where dreams threaten to break through to reality, but that only begins to describe it. There are a lot of religious overtones, which occasionally threaten to get a little heavy-handed when she singles out the Catholic Church, but I admire her guts taking on such a divisive issue. And she finds just the right balance of terror and romance. Make no mistake, though, even though there's a love story at its heart, there are some unsettling moments in here.

Gothic and dreamy, Night Sea Journey is worth a shot. If nothing else, it's worth the price for her intricate descriptions, but you'll likely get much more out of it than that.

This is a well written story by an author with skill. I gave the story five stars because of power of story. Although the beginning chapter starts off like observing someone in a restaurant engaged in an argument you don’t know. It is a bit of a put off-- but after the first chapter the story gained speed. And the way the narration jumps around, shifting from one view point and back again tips us off that NIGHT SEA JOURNEY is a Modernistic work. The story is a bit fragmented and linear. Although, I love cliff hangers the author seemed to leave the reader in a ditch with some chapters. It was like wondering what would happen after Snow White took a bite of the apple. Although these minor stumbling blocks didn’t take me out of the story. If foreboding subtext, and modernistic writing floats your boat then by all means the story is quite good and worthy of five stars. BRAVO.
