5.0 out of 5 stars 12 Signs Worth of Talent
Liz Story has been a favorite of mine for some time. She is quite a bit more adventurous than a lot of musicians who get genrefied as 'new age,' shifting from melodious to jazz-like, and not a few moments of parody and comedy. Expecting Story to play predictable is ill-advised, and Night Sky Essays are an example of the breadth of her talent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I absolutely love how Liz Story creates entrancing melodies on the piano and have been a fervent fan for years. However, this album was certainly a disappointment. I appreciate how she has created music for the Zodiac but the melodies are dry, redundant and do not resonate her trademark style and musicality. The set of pieces is ostensible based on the progress of the Zodiac. But even a cursory listen will reveal the Liz Story's zodiac is a bit different from the one we are used to. Who would imagine Leo doing a dance tune, or Aries in stately chords. She ranges over classical, folk, pop, jazz, and a dash of impressionism in this one album.

Eclectic in style there still is real thought behind the work. She offers no justification, no explanation, just a set of demonstrations of fine keyboard art.

I absolutely love how Liz Story creates entrancing melodies on the piano and have been a fervent fan for years. However, this album was certainly a disappointment. I appreciate how she has created music for the Zodiac but the melodies are dry, redundant and do not resonate her trademark style and musicality. I still feel that her talent is unsurpassed and look forward to future productions. This album may have been an experiment that doesn't work for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another unique creation from Liz Story!, June 11, 2010
This review is from: Night Sky Essays (Audio CD)
Like many of Liz Story's other albums, this one is very different, new, and unexpected treat! I never would have anticipated that her music could be fit into a format as restrictive as the Zodiac. Definitely a recommended download or CD copy!

An added bonus of the CD copy is the liner notes and beautiful CD art. The inside of the liner notes provide alternate "hints" of the subtitles linked to each Zodiac sign in the inner cover art, like "Heartbeat" for Leo.

A wide range of tones and moods artistically and thoughtfully woven into the 12 Zodiac signs, from the twin lines of Gemini (my favorite), to the deeply romantic Cancer, the jungle-like but heartful beat of Leo, and even some serious playground fun! Highly recommended
