Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-This meaty little volume is the next stop for graduates of Jay M. Pasachoff's Peterson First Guide to Astronomy (Houghton, 1998). It is also an invaluable resource for serious stargazers. The book incorporates the Discovery Channel's acclaimed visuals to explain everything from the shapes of galaxies to determining distances between celestial objects. Photographs of the heavenly bodies are nothing short of glorious. "A Celestial Tour" presents through text, drawings, and photographs such topics as the expanding universe, the emergence of galaxies, the evolution and life cycle of stars, our solar system, and the cutting edge of astronomy. It gives readers a strong base of knowledge in the fundamentals of the universe. "The Backyard Astronomer" provides information for choosing the most useful equipment for viewing the sky as well as tips for astrophotography. "Observing the Nighttime Sky" includes instructions and helpful advice for successfully using the well-designed star charts. Each alphabetically presented map is rich with interesting information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Astronomy Guide/Hand Book, February 25, 2000

This review is from: Night Sky : An Explore Your World Handbook (Paperback)
This 1999 handbook is so well done, there's no close second. The VERY BEST PART is that next to many of the charts are FULL COLOR pictures of the messier object within that chart. With each chart (I counted 93?) is a detailed description of the constellation and the objects of interest that it contains. Although I don't like the binding, this book is so well done, so colorful, so detailed in what it contains (I counted 144 NGC objects), that I'd add this to your MUST have book list (but not to be your ONLY book). You will not regret the purchase of THIS book. This book is a good reference, yet can be read like a novel. The beginner who reads through this book will no longer be a beginner.
