Perfect for the amateur astronomer, or anyone who loves the stars, November 27, 2010
This review is from: Night Sky: A Field Guide to the Constellations (Paperback)
This book is provides a terrific introduction to star gazing and is the right size to take along while you are out looking at the night sky (even comes with a flash light). Not only does it help readers to locate constellations in the sky in an easy to follow way, but it also provides lots of interesting information about their history in nice small doses that help the reader appreciate how long humans have been fascinated by and drawn to the stars.
Reading about the constellations while finding them in the night sky, this field guide helps one to feel a connection to the people from ancient times who mapped out the constellations we can still identify today. And it does this without over burdeing the reader.
You don't need and probably don't want an Astronomy text book to learn a bit more about the stars. This book is more like the Clilff Notes to the stars that you aways wanted.
It is also a very practical and well orangized book. It offers different approaches to finding the stars and constellations, because, well, people are different and this way there will probably be an approach that works well for you.
I am stocking up on the book and the cards (sold separately)to give to my 14 year old nephew who lives in the desert in California and my 50+ year old brother-in-law who lives in rural Western Mass.

Perfect introduction to star-gazing, December 8, 2010
This review is from: Night Sky: A Field Guide to the Constellations (Paperback)
This is the only book I own about the stars and I have found it to be very informative and easy to use. This book is good for finding those stars and constellations that I used to see and wonder about. Now I can easily figure out what I am looking at. There is also interesting information about how the stars and constellations were named and other historical background information. The book itself is not large, perfect for bringing outside with you; this book is built to be used. Sturdy paperback binding/cover and sturdy pages leads me to believe that I will probably be enjoying this book for a long time. The book comes with a flat red light contained in a pouch inside the back cover, which is handy but if you are going to be using it a lot, I would suggest getting a better light. In conclusion, if you don't have anything else and you are not sure whether this book is worth it, buy it! I don't think you will be disappointed.
