Now THAT'S the Snug Harbor experience!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Night at Snug Harbor, New Orleans (Audio CD)
After two sessions at Snug Harbor with Ellis' quartet in the last two years, it's great to hear an album that captures the feeling of his shows.
First, Ellis is the master of "laying back" and letting his other musicians shine. Many of his works start with him riffing on the piano, leading the group down a musical path, then letting them explore their own steps. It's easy to forget that he's there, in the background, driving the whole show. Second, the crowd at Snug always is respectful of Ellis and his crew, and it shows in this recording. While there's plenty of foot tapping and head bobbing, there's not the constant "whoops" and shout outs that are familiar to many jazz fans. Instead, Snug goers hold their praise until the end of a solo, and the end of a piece. You can hear and feel the intimacy of Snug Harbor here, too.
