5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Black Romance At Its Best!
Regardless of your race, if you like romance novels, you'll love Beverly Jenkins...I was introduced to Beverly Jenkins in 1996! I'd purchased Vivid and Night Song together because of the beautiful people on the cover. But, I was reluctant to dive in because I wasn't sure what to expect. Well after reading those 2 back to back, I was hooked. Every trip to the book...

Cara Lee Henson is an Oberlin graduate and schoolteacher in the all-black town of Henry Adams, Kansas. She falls immediately in lust/love with Chase Jefferson, a buffalo soldier who has heretofore been content to love 'em and leave 'em, but of course that all changes when he meets the "sassy" and opinionated Cara. She's in a delicate situation (morals...

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Black Romance At Its Best!, September 29, 1999

Regardless of your race, if you like romance novels, you'll love Beverly Jenkins...I was introduced to Beverly Jenkins in 1996! I'd purchased Vivid and Night Song together because of the beautiful people on the cover. But, I was reluctant to dive in because I wasn't sure what to expect. Well after reading those 2 back to back, I was hooked. Every trip to the book store since, leads me to the romance section in search of a new Beverly Jenkins release. Since that time in 1996, I've purchased and read Indigo, Topaz and Through The Storm...Beverly Jenkins is the queen of historical black romance! I can't wait to get my hands on her latest, "The Taming Of Jesse Rose" *****(5 stars!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Me, Read a Romance Novel??? -- Heck Yeah!!!, April 5, 2005
By
This review is from: Night Song (Mass Market Paperback)
A co-worker of mine told me about Beverly Jenkins last year and thought -- what?! I don't read romance novels! Give me a good murder/mystery/non-fiction and I'm good to go. Well, she wouldn't let it go and said that I just HAD to read one of Ms. Jenkins books and I would be hooked. I didn't believe her, but to shut her up, I bought Night Song since it was the first book. When I took a looked at the cover, I just shook my head. Who reads this cheesy crap?!

After finishing this book in only a few days, I was totally hooked! The story of Cara and Chase is well written and you get a little bit if history in the mix. And the love scenes -- Whoa! I didn't expect that! The best part of all is that although this is fiction, we get a chance to read about African-Americans living normal lives back in the 1800's. Of course slavery was going on and nobody can forget about that, but then again there were free blacks also. They were living, working, loving, etc.

Cara is a career woman who has gone to college and isn't looking to settle down. Chase is a buffalo soldier just out to flirt with Cara to pass the time. They never expected to end up so much in love.

Since reading this book back in December, I've read nine of Ms. Jenkins other boooks and I'm not stopping until I've read them all. Night Song is my favorite because it was the first, but Indigo is a close second.

Night Song is a book you can read over and over again and never tire of it. You feel all the emotion that the author wanted to convey to the readers. She uses fact and fiction to keep the reader reading more and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something wonderful..., January 2, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Song (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was my introduction to a wonderful writer of romance novels.I had never seen a hisotical romance novel involving African Americans so I was intrigued. I picked the book up at a used bookstore and it sat on my shelf for over a month because I was reading some other books at the time. When I finally got around to reading it I was captivated. It was informative, sexy as all get out, and one of the best books I've read in quite a while!! Ms. Jenkins' story should appeal to all women not just those of color as I am. As an African American woman I am happy to find and author such as Ms. Jenkins. She holds her own with the other writers of this genre and delivers a good, heartwarming story of love and it's rewards. If you get the chance, pick it up. It's well worth your time

5.0 out of 5 stars Chase Jefferson Take me please!!!!!`, March 15, 2002

This review is from: Night Song (Mass Market Paperback)
Beverly Jenkins has given us a hero, prince charming, provider, a lover, a dream come true with Chase Jefferson. Any woman and every woman would love to be Cara Lee Henson, if the prize was
Chase Jefferson. I loved this story because it has everything from a history lesson to romantic rendevous. This is the novel that you stay up all night to finish and when you read the last page, you are wishing for more more more. When Jefferson carries Cara into the hotel, against everyones opinion, I knew he was my hero. This is real solid love that every woman wants out of her prince charming. Beverly has taken us back to a time when men were men and thats how we liked them. This is a calgon moment for sure. If you like some mystery and suspense, this has that also. EXCELLENT!!!!

Even in the days of the Buffalo Soilder, a man in uniform could melt the heart of a woman. Melt the heart of Cara Lee Henson is just what Sgt. Chase Jefferson did; also allowing his own heart to melt. Both promising not to fall in love with the other for there own reasons. They soon became fast friends, and were falling in love with each other just as fast . Neither willing to admitt it to the other. Then the trouble starts, Cara is pregnant, doesn't tell Chase, looses her job as a teacher because she has no husband. Miles who can't understand why she want date him try to kidnap her and she looses the baby. In come the Buffalo Solider to the rescue, finds her sick, marries her and vows to take care of her the rest of her life. Even after being married it takes them almot a year to say I LOVE YOU to each other. This time Miles does kidnap Cara, and Chase goes through hell to get her back. A wonderful Historical romance. 5.0 out of 5 stars Deep, turbulent love story, with many ghosts...., February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Song (Mass Market Paperback)
I was riveted from the get-go, drawn into the romantic legends of our "Buffalo soldiers", the fate of our first teachers and this hot-cold, rocky romance. How they came to marry was chilling, and it was torturous as Chase and Cara worked through the demons in their relationship and the outside forces as well (I even read it with my fingers crossed!!!). It is a wonderful first novel, and IT'S ABOUT TIME we see some strong SISTERS in romances for a change. Thank you Beverly, for watering that dry wasteland in the historical department!!! 5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing..., April 21, 2006
This review is from: Night Song (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm really appreciative of other reader's reviews, especially when they are on the money. Going on the recommendations of others, "Night Song" was my first Beverly Jenkins book. This book was MESMERIZING and SEXY. I am now a die hard fan and plan to read all her books.

Cara and Chase were SO meant for each other. Both had suffered loss, but were survivors. The sparks that flew between them were intense and nearly jumped off the pages. I also enjoyed the historical background of the Tenth and Ninth Calvary. Most of all, I was so happy to see that despite the slavery, prejudice and hardship surrounding Cara and Chase, they had the determination, commitment and courage to love. Wonderful, wonderful book!

Beverly Jenkins is awesome. Not only are her love scenes hot but you are given a wealth of historical knowledge regarding the reconstruction and subsequent jim crow period in our history. She is able to make you proud of our contributions and especially proud of our black men and the way they treat their families and women. She is great and the stories have plots that hold your interest and keep you wanting more.
