5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for new parents!
What an excellent CD! We play this for our three week old during feedings and when the baby is falling asleep. We especially liked Kim's rendition of "You Can Close Your Eyes" written by James Taylor. "Pajamas" and "Inchworm" are fun songs to sing along to as well. We would recommend this CD over a "Smart Baby" Classical CD any...

1.0 out of 5 stars Lullabies for the caffeine depraved
I found most of the songs too "hopped up" to help my two year old daughter relax and unwind. This is treated more like playtime music rather than bedtime. Nothing beats Chet Baker sings, especially "My Funny Valentine" for a great lullabye

5.0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old daughter is obsessed with this CD, August 6, 1999
This review is from: Night Songs & Lullabies (Audio CD)
This beautiful bouquet of songs has made our hectic morning commute a joy. And I have not fallen asleep at the wheel. My daughter's repeated "again", as the last note of The Waters of March sound, has etched that song forever in both our memories. Kim has a wonderful voice, and the other musicians on the CD are excellent. Thank you for this wonderful recording of gorgeous songs that never condescends. I am buying it for some friends who have children, and a couple others who don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, luxurious, warm renditions of many old favorites, October 5, 1999

Kim Scanlon and a talented group of excellent musicians create exquisite jazzy interpretations of many old classics. My young daughters (6 & 8) love this recording, and so do I! Not to be missed: Moon River; and Somewhere Over the Rainbow; and Pajamas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A recording of intelligent creativity., June 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Songs & Lullabies (Audio CD)
Here is a recording paradoxically simple and complex. Night Songs and Lullabies is an apt title describing the songs, but the title doesn't convey the smooth, lush blend of Scanlon's vocal versatility and her accomplished backup musicians. This album is obviously a labor of love and intelligent creativity. This is not really an album to make one sleepy as belied by the title. It is a work of art that celebrates a part of each one of us that longs for a simpler time in our lives. Each song has individual character and Scanlon pays delightful homage to each. Several of my friends have a copy, and each has a different favorite song. Mine happens to be "Pajamas" because it portrays the safety I used to feel when my mom got me ready for bed. Kim's phrasing in "Hit the Road to Dreamland" makes that song stay with me hours after the stereo is turned off. Anyhow, check this one out. I bet you buy it for a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent gift for new parents, July 16, 2004

We received this CD as a gift when we had our first child, and it quickly became part of our nighttime relaxation ritual. It's a great way to relax after a hectic day, and the tunes never get old, even after you've heard them a hundred times. We're now buying this as a gift for friends that have newborns!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album for Mom (and baby), May 2, 2002

I originally checked this CD out from the library, and after renewing it continuously, I'm delighted to purchase a copy of my own. The CD is really for me, though I'm glad to share the music with my 2 year old and soon-to-come baby. With hours spent breastfeeding, Kim Scanlon's jazzy sound and the delightful lyrics made the time with baby more charished. "Pajamas" is a great song to sing for a bedtime ritual; my toddler has it memorized and sings it for me now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quiet revelation, January 23, 2001
By
This review is from: Night Songs & Lullabies (Audio CD)
This is an extraordinary album. Scanlon has done a fabulous job finding material that is accessible for children of any age, yet rich and complex enough for their music-loving parents. The arrangements are eclectic and beautifully textured, and Scanlon's beautiful voice ranges from rich, resonant lows to clear bell-like highs. Some of the songs are familiar, and many are not, but all of them delight and surprise in their own way. This is an amazing solo debut. I hope we will hear more from her soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding quiet jazz vocals, beautifully supported, September 8, 1999

Kim Scanlon has a clear and delightful voice. Her choice of material is perfection and it is rendered masterfully. There are no frills but nothing is left out. The instrumentals are brilliant and enhancing, but not detracting. Whenever friends hear the album, they want to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars tender and mellow, November 18, 2003
By
This review is from: Night Songs & Lullabies (Audio CD)
Whether you have a child or not, this CD is a must for setting a tender, mellow mood. My 20-month old goes to sleep to it every night, and it's the only CD his father and I haven't tired of. Each song is a gem: impeccably orchestrated and sung with crystal clarity. Kim Scanlon's renditions of "Inchworm" and James Taylor's melancholy "You Can Close Your Eyes" make me tear up even after dozens of hearings, and her delicate version of the lullaby "Night Will Never Stay" will make this a favorite. Her wistful "Moon River" makes me remember why I loved that song so much when I was little. Give this CD to everyone you know, no matter what age.
