5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Great American Soldiers
I have just finished this book in a great 4 night read. I found the book to be well written, exciting and a great tribute to the men and families of the Night Stalkers. I served at Fort Campbell as an Army Surgeon during the creation of this unit (1980-81) and saw the first "Little Bird" conversions. One of the authors (LtCol Bob Johnson) was my guide on that day. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nigh Stalkers
Not as gripping and entertaining as his first book In The Company of Heroes, This book was disappointing by comparison, and read like a history book.

Until then, I had never seen a helicopter with seats on the OUTSIDE! My thanks to the authors for providing insight into a very secret and special military unit and some of its famous operations.
My family and I are glad that we have the men and the will to create, deploy and support a unit such as this. I hope that we can all learn what it means to be an American from this book and the Night Stalkers.
Read this book - you will not be disappointed! NSDQ

This is the kind of book that get you reading for hours.
Already among my favourites.
I think this is one of the most descriptive accounts about what the Night Stalkers do and a very detailled description of the few missions that can be talked about.
An excellent book.

This book is a great read! What these soldiers can do is amazing. I had to read this because my son is a new Night Stalker. I can't help but well up with pride and fear because I now have an idea of what the Night Stalkers can do.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Great Book About Great Heroes, November 12, 2007

Night Stalkers is a book written by heroes, about heroes and a must read for America's future heroes. The book is a must for anyone interested in our military's special operations units. Mike Durant, Steven Hartov and Lt Col (Ret) Robert Johnson go to great lenghts to acurately present the unbelievable talent, skill and heroics of the members of the 160th SOAR. The book is a well-written, factually correct, and easy to read. Once started, you will find it hard to the book put down.

After reading about the members and missions of the 160th SOAR, it is obvious that the Night Stalkers are some of the unsung heroes of the special operations community. In the words of a man who I admire greatly, the book was "Totally AWESOME".

5.0 out of 5 stars Review, March 4, 2008
This review is from: The Night Stalkers (Hardcover)
This is a excellent account of the early history of those visionaries who brought the 160th into being. The short bio of each individual serves to underscore the tenacity of the founding Night Stalkers, and those who man the Regiment today. "Night Stalkers Don't Quit!" is not just another catchy slogan, it's a way of life within the Regiment at all levels.
It's really a shame that the American taxpayer cannot see all they are getting for their tax dollars from the members of the 160th, and the units they support. SPEC OPS is perhaps the biggest bang for the buck in the military today. I'm glad some of the declassified missions were able to come to the light of day. NSDQ! Night Stalker 1986 - 1998

4.0 out of 5 stars The Night Stalkers: Top Secret Missions of the U.S. Army's Special Operations Aviation Regiment, May 4, 2011
As the child of a former Little BIrd pilot this book taught me a lot about what my dad did as I was growing up throughout the 80s and 90s. I was always told he's a helicopter pilot but we couldn't know where he was going or what he was doing-it was secret. What does a little girl know? That just meant I couldn't know where he was going or what he was doing-since he had been doing this since I was 3 it was normal. As a little girl in the 80s I had no idea that my dad was a "real" hero (much to his dismay his name is actually mentioned in this book-as is the nature of most of these men, they like to keep their identities to themselves, and bragging is usually not in their nature). It wasn't until I found out he was working with Navy Seals when I was around 14 that I realized there was more to my dad's job then a lot of my friends who's dads were 101st helicopter pilots. It was at this time that my mom told me a little more about the importance that his unit/company actually played in top secret missions. Still, she gave no details (as she never knew any herself)-which is where this book has filled in the blanks. Great military history in this book-much of which the regular American will never know even happened.

I am keeping this book (i received a free copy) for my son so when he is older he can read about what his grandfather did and about the silent heroes who put their lives on the line to keep America safe. I would actually purchase this book if I hadn't received the free copy, and would love to see it on the Kindle-it would definitely be worth having! It's also neat to read about men who I knew and to think about their families whom I was/am close to.

There are a few inaccuracies (however, I'm told they are minor) in the book, as the missions are told by the memories of these missions from men who may have been there in the action or who were there but not in the heat of the action. I'm sure a lot of important stuff that is still classified has been left out as well, as it should be. Great read, hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dynamite Book!, June 9, 2008

Night Stalkers grips you and hangs on. Durant's Faith in his God and his fellow soldiers is inspiring. The only "survivor book" that tops it is Marcus Lutrell's "Lone Survivor".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, December 27, 2011
By
This book was a great addition to my library. I am sure you have heard it said that the book is better than the movie....well, after seeing the movie I was curious as to the origins of the night stalkers and this book helps to make the movie better(at least for me anyway). I for one thought the movie was excellent, but the book fills in the details wonderfully and helps to paint the picture a little clearer. If you, like me, were wondering about the training, previous missions, and "brother-hood" of the night stalkers then you should add this one to your collection as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helicopter Heroes, Unveiled, October 22, 2011
This review is from: The Night Stalkers (Hardcover)
The 160th SOAR (A) is the U.S. Army's most storied (and top-secret) special operations aviation unit. In the wake of the Jimmy Carter Iran Hostage rescue attempt debacle, the Army realized they needed a permanent special operations helicopter force. Soon, the best helicopter pilots in the world were secretly flying Little Birds and other specially modified aircraft in clandestine, high-risk operations.

The Night Stalkers is an incredible account of their exploits. Durant illustrates their story with tremendous detail that will be heady stuff for both civilians and military readers alike. It's hard to write about such an impressive group of airmen soldiers without engaging in hero worship, but the author manages to be as objective as can be expected here. His access is amazing; surely most of this book would still be classified if the Army had their way.

One of my Army comrades was a pilot in the 160th and gave his life in a secret operation. For most of the world, he died in anonymous service in defense of our nation. Thankfully, "The Night Stalker" shares the story of these unsung heroes for the rest of us to appreciate.
