Best in the Night series!!,

This review is from: Night Storm (Mass Market Paperback)
A long time ago I read this book - while I liked it - it did not leave the impression that the second reading did having just finished Night Fire & Shadow. Alec certainly did not stand out in the other books - and you really were not totally sure how much he was in love with his first wife Nesta. You certainly did realize that his grief and guilt when she died giving birth to their daughter Hallie - and he was committed to never marrying again. Of course don't these rakes all say that - until they meet THE one woman that upsets their well ordered life. And this is exactly what happens when he meets Genny. Their initial meeting is totally unique - her disguised (not very well in his opinion) as a young man Eugene. She/he is attempting to run her father's shipping yard and Alec arrives from London to buy from her family. There is one catch though her father will only sell if Alec agrees to marry her as well. So many many twists and turns to this relationship. They are a firey couple as Genny is so different than any woman Alec has ever met. She is so stubborn about not being dominated by a man - has no desire to wed - but oh did I say desire --well she has plenty of that and when she and Alec finally errupt in bed well that pretty much settles at least that aspect of their relationship. However there are so many other things to settle - and for awhile when Alec has amnesia Genny is not sure which Alec is real and which is not. Several reviewers did mention Alec as a jerk - I just did not see this. Yes, he wanted to dominate as most men back then did and yes it took him a long while to realize the intensity of his feelings for Genny but he did - and I never saw any example of total cruelty toward her - he was always faithful and no matter how much they faught they always seemed to kiss and make up - so to speak!! This was a wild ride of a book - could not put it down! Really a great Coulter read!

Yeah, yeah..so the hero is your typical alpha-male, so what? He had plenty of redeeming qualities. Coulter did a fine job pacing this story. I have read so many over-worded books lately, this was refreshing. The ending did drag a little but I can forgive her that. Overall, I would probably rate this a 4 STAR, but I think some of the other reviewers were much to harsh with their one and two star designations.

A sad book.,

I liked the first half of this book, but towards the end things started to go terribly wrong. I began to feel terribly sorry for Genny, and even though I knew things were out of Alec's hands, his behavior to the end seemed inexcusable. Horribly mean. Didn't like it at all.

Any time I read a book and it can bring forth an emotion, it's got to be well written. Catherine Coulter's book always have that effect on me. And this one is no exception. I hate books that are predictable. Yes they all have happy endings, but it's the journey that makes it worth the time to read. And a trip with Ms. Coulter is always interesting. Hearts and flowers are great once in a while. But a steady diet is very boring. Give me a struggle, a knock down drag out fight, a handsome rogue with a heart, and a heroine who doesn't always look like Cindy Crawford and I'm in heaven. If you want everything sugar coated try Mary Poppins. But if you want to laugh, cry or just get ticked off... Give Ms. Coulter a try.

The book arrived in great shape. I started reading the story I could not put it down. I am so glad I can order books from Overstock and they arrive in the condition as professed.

I laughed so hard I snorted through at least the first half of the book. Alec and Genny are so perfect for each other and yet so strong willed. They continue to go toe to toe, making for some hilarious scenes.
As to complaints of Alec's unwanted advances--acts that now a days would constitute assualt at the very least--keep in mind this book is set in the early 1800s. And Genny is not blameless in all this. She dresses as a man and goes with Alec to a brothel, among other things. The fact they are perfect for each other and that they both want each other (though loath to admit it) makes these scenes easier to tollerate. The relationship Alec has with his daughter lends some softness and kindness to his character as well. The story does drag a bit at the end and the 'subdue her and control her by sex' thing gets a little tiresome. I'd like to have seen more gradual growth of both characters. All in all, though, I liked this book. It was definietly good for some laughs in the beginning. It's the second best of the trilogy, IMO, the best being book 2, 'Night Shadow,' featuring Knight Winthrop.

I do wonder if some of the readers giving this book such terrible reviews based on Alec's character read to the very end?
I love the Night Trilogy. Don't write off Night Storm simply because of Alec's behavior in the first 2/3 of the book. Part of the story is how Genny changes his behavior and his attitude towards her and women in general. It's important to remember that he has a young daughter that shares Genny's interests and if Alec doesn't straighten out, what's to happen to her? Coulter drops several hints throughout this book and in the other Night books (Night Fire I think) as to why Alec is the way he is. His first wife catered to him terribly. Never challenging him at all and always giving in. This led to a man who did as he pleased. When Genny enters the picture, he quite simply doesn't know how to deal with her and Genny is not used to being told what to do. Of course they are going to clash, loudly. These are two very headstrong people.

Genny and Alec meet in America and from that point on it goes downhill. This book was immediately put in the trash. I kept reading it hoping it would get better, it didn't, it got worse. Alec was a barbarian and needed taken down a notch or two. He wasn't even worthy of Nesta, let alone Genny. There was no real closure to their problems and Alec's cruel heart, either. How could you believe he loved her? Genny needs to hit him on the head again.
