5.0 out of 5 stars Great short reads!
I'm a new reader of Nora Roberts so I thought I'd begin with this book that has 2 short stores within it, just to see what I thought. Am I ever glad I did! Both stories found within this book are excellent, suspenseful romances. I like how each dealt with different places and stories but also dealt with 2 sisters. The first story, Night Shift involved Cilla O'Roarke while...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great.
This is a book with 2 seperate stories about sisters.

I'm giving it 3 stars because i enjoyed the first - 4 star worthy, didn't much care for the second - perhaps 2 stars.

The first story belongs to Cilla. She's a night dj for a popular radio station in Denver. She does a request line as part of her midnight show and picks up a stalker. The...

The police are brought in and of course she falls for the good looking cop, Boyd, although begrudgingly.
It was an interesting story, pretty well written and *most* of the time kept my attention. A bit anti-climactic, but it was a short story of sorts so i guess we can't expect all that much. ;)

The second story belongs to Deborah. Deborah is an Assistant District Attorney responsible for prosecuting the scum in her high crime city. She meets Gage along the way and this is where i lost interest. A handsome devil for sure, she does know how to write a hero! However, after waking from almost a year long coma he finds he has the power to turn himself invisible. That's right, i said invisible. So he plays this secondary role, Nemesis, the vigilante hero keeping the streets clean after dark. Of course Deborah doesn't realize he's one in the same man, so that part of the story was a bit weak and overdone. Deborah and Gage were really great together, some pretty hot and romantic scenes. My favorite part was Deborah's temper, although she never seemed to hold on to it which i found disappointing. She'd come storming into a room spitting mad, Gage would toss her a simple "i love you" and she'd just melt all over the place. Too bad really, she had a great temper that made me laugh out loud... for a second.
I couldn't seem to get over the invisibility bit, so far fetched the story never seemed real to me and didn't hold my interest.

I love Nora but this certainly isn't her best work. It's apparently the first in a trilogy of duel story novels. I won't bother picking up the sequels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great short reads!, July 11, 2005
I'm a new reader of Nora Roberts so I thought I'd begin with this book that has 2 short stores within it, just to see what I thought. Am I ever glad I did! Both stories found within this book are excellent, suspenseful romances. I like how each dealt with different places and stories but also dealt with 2 sisters. The first story, Night Shift involved Cilla O'Roarke while the second, Night Shadow, involved her younger sister, Deborah O'Roarke. In the second, which took place years into the future, we got a glimpse of what happened with Cilla and Boyd from the first story while learning what Deborah had been up to later in life. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's either thinking about reading any novel by Roberts or an already Roberts fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good series, but I didn't like the heroine, September 9, 2005
I've read so many of Nora Roberts' books that I rarely write reviews. All of her characters and stories seem pretty similar and they all blend together.

This one sticks out in my mind because of how much I did not like one of the heroines. Cilla from Night Shift just rubbed me the wrong way. Nora has created many a "testy" heroine in her career, and normally I'm a big fan of the standoffish woman melting into a woman in love.

Cilla however just seemed to grate at every turn. Although the story was interesting, I just could not understand what Boyd saw in her. She seemed overly defensive, rarely friendly, appreciative or kind. She did sacrifice a lot to take care of her sister; she had that going for her. But even keeping that in mind I don't think she deserved Boyd. As I said, I've read nearly all of Nora's books, and this is the only one in which I so strongly disliked one of the main characters.

Cilla's sister Deborah was far more appealing(in Night Shadow), and I actually enjoyed the plot of that one much better as well. Overall I'd certainly recommend this series, as it has a little more mystery than Nora's standard fair. There are two more books following this one (six stories total) all which are worth a read. However, it was almost that dislike of Cilla in Night Shift which turned me off of the whole series. They get better after that one!

I loved this book. This is on that I will most likely read again if I dont have a new book. I love to scan over books that I have already read, and go over my favorite parts. This was one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Night Shadow, March 21, 2010
I have all the books in the "Death" series and they are great. I also have many of Nora Roberts other books which are also very good. Night Shift was an easy, entertaining read. However, I did not especially care for Night Shadow. It seemed as though the characters were "borrowed" from the JD Robb, In Death, books. There is Gage who is very wealthy and handsome as is Roarke. Gage owns a ton of high end real estate as does Roarke. Gage has the ability to hack into systems (IRS, etc.) illegally, as does Roarke. Gage's "Majordomo" is Patrick and Roarke's is Summerset.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short for closure; not Roberts' best, May 17, 2009
I liked "Night Shadow" better than "Night Shift," but both of these were shorter than they could have been and I would have liked. Just didn't feel there was enough time to get through all the plot points. The characters seemed more "real" and were more likeable in "Night Shadow."

5.0 out of 5 stars Just my opinion, December 1, 2008
In the last year I have made it my mission to read strictly Nora Roberts books or her JD Robb series. I find all of her writing extraordinary. Night Shift/Night Shadow are two great stories which are the first in a series of 3 books and 6 stories. I am on the second book now and enjoying it as much as the first. I highly recommend it. I also recommend the Sisters Island Trilogy. Absolutely fantastic. I've never read anything I didn't like by Nora. I have read over 75 of her books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boyd & Cilla's story is ONE star, Deborah & Gage's Story Only marginally better, August 21, 2008
Nora Roberts is usually a master storyteller, but Boyd & Cilla's story moved at an excruciatingly slow pace. Cilla wasn't even pleasant and Boyd came off as an overbearing doof, when I'm sure he could have been much more if he'd had a different heroine and a different story. I appreciate that Ms Roberts did her research into radio DJs, but after the initial set-up of Cilla's occupation, it got really boring.

Gage & Deborah were a bit more interesting, but not much. At least they were likable people.
