From Booklist

As in Gary Soto’s Snapshots from the Wedding (1997), this true-to-life story is told from the perspective of a flower girl in a Latino wedding celebration. Ana Luisa looks forward to her sister’s nuptials and her own, much-anticipated role, but at the appointed moment, she finds herself too overcome with anxiety to walk down the aisle. At the festive reception, though, her shame evaporates as her family members communicate their understanding and love. Supported by Caravela’s inviting, page-filling oil paintings, Kraus’ text highlights specific Latino traditions, such as making wedding tamales, while sensitively capturing how responsibilities that seem minor to grown-ups often loom large in the minds of children. This may not be the best choice to share with flower girls-to-be, who may find that Ana Luisa’s experience sows seeds of worry. But kids who have been in Ana Luisa’s shoes will relate to her believable stage fright, and those who simply like stories about weddings will find this one as picturesque as they could wish. Grades 1-3. --Jennifer Mattson

This is a gentle, realistic look at Ana Luisa's anticipation of a great event: her big sister's wedding, at which she will be flower girl. The author's prose is lyrical yet unsentimental, and the realistic illustrations are stunning. Although the story could have been sad, the overall feeling is one of warmth and family love.

I collect beautiful picture books, and this is my latest find. The colorful, touching illustrations and the lyrical text are wonderful. A story of family love told with great sensitivity, this book is going on my gift list for several grandchildren. Charming.

I loved this book. It's a moving story about a little girl who wants to be a flower girl at a family wedding, but ends up learning how much her family love her, just for being herself. The message is very uplifting, and the illustrations support the text beautifully. I think that any child would enjoy this gentle and memorable story. The fact that Joanna H. Kraus is a very experienced writer really comes over - the prose is a real pleasure to read.
