Editorial Reviews

Review

“laugh-inducing, highly relatable, and appealing”
Bust Magazine

“excellent new book of essays."
Brooklyn magazine

“For all the fun Cardiff makes of the idiocy of her youth, she astutely notes that ‘all feelings are at once more lucid and baroque when we’re seventeen.’ It’s to Cardiff’s credit that these feelings, no matter how overwrought they were at the time, are remembered here with humor, sensitivity, and wisdom.”
Publishers Weekly, Starred Review & Pick of the Week

“Night Terrors reminds us that we all used to be younger and dumber, but the education we got along the way was priceless, and hindsight can make it hilarious.”
—Biographile.com

I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book.

Ms Cardiff has a wonderful sense of humor and a effortless writing style that is easy to read and captivated me from the first page.

While I enjoyed the comedic aspect, I appreciated the crudeness of life's lessons encountered with the coming of age.

Whole Lotta going on..... Very funny, fast read. I eventually started reading it aloud to my friends because they were tired of my mediocre regurgitations.
A little raunchy, lotta funny, and if you have ever been a teenage girl, you get it. If you haven't been a teenage girl, you will still enjoy...

I just finished reading this today and was pretty impressed with it. If you're looking for a frequently hilarious commentary on human sexuality and the transition to adulthood, you will enjoy this book greatly. Incidentally, much of this transition is not remotely funny when it is happening to you at the time (well, maybe a little), and so another enjoyable part of reading this book is the chance to vicariously laugh at your past self a little bit through the author's misadventures. If you are also seriously interested in human sexuality (especially the poorly explored territory that is women's sexuality) you'll find that there's a lot of real wisdom in here too. I often found myself thinking "Alas, if only I had known this 10 years ago!" But wishes are for fishes as they say, and I wouldn't have been able to appreciate most of this book without bringing my own hard-won life lessons to it. That about sums up my assessment of who this book is for: if you've passed your first quarter century and been knocked around a little in the process you will likely find it affirming. Any earlier than that or with too charmed a life and I suspect it would be a bit pointless, like a 9 year old reading BG&E. Unless that 9 year old is some kind of miniature genius. Anyway, I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed the first 1/3 of this book (and laughed out loud A LOT) but then it moved away from narrative and more toward self-centered diary entries with ironic/jokey commentary. This writer is talented, and I appreciate her tone and style, I just felt like the book lost its focus and fun part way through

I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. As I neared the end I began to experience anticipatory grief. Please buy and read this book, because it will make you a better person, and because I really, really, really want her to write more.

Ashley Cardiff is a great American voice. Young men trying to find their way in the dating world of NYC should consider this a primer.
