Book Description

Lois Duncan, a master of the thriller, knows what makes for great suspense writing. And her extraordinary selection of short stories, featuring 11 all-new tales by a first-class crew of young adult writers, is full of chills, surprises, and terrors--all the stuff that the most frightening nightmares are made of.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Asked to produce short stories with the theme of night and terror, 11 prominent YA mystery writers have eagerly taken the road less traveled. Particularly spooky is "The Bogey Man" by Annette Curtis Klause, who makes a good argument for building houses without cellars. In Theodore Taylor's "The Grind of an Axe," a family advertises for a Scandinavian nanny?and gets an axe-wielding Viking relative instead. "Bearing Paul" by Chris Lynch is a searing portrait of a boy required to be a pallbearer at his friend's funeral. Joan Lowery Nixon examines urban horrors with a story about a girl initiated into a teen gang; unfortunately, her slangy dialogue is hard-going. Other contributors are Patricia Windsor, Richard Peck, Harry Mazer, Norma Fox Mazer, Alane Ferguson, Joan Aiken and Madge Harrah?all of whom find plenty of room to spread their dark and sinister wings. Ages 12-up. (June) FYI: A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this book will be donated to the Young Adult Library Services Association of the ALA.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up?Various modern-day bogeys, both real and imaginary, lurk in the pages of this compelling collection of original short stories from acclaimed YA authors. Traditional terror figures dominate some tales, such as Annette Curtis Klause's basement monster, Theodore Taylor's escaped madman, and Patricia Windsor's murderer in the woods. Chris Lynch and Alane Ferguson's protagonists are each caught in spirals of psychological fear. Joan Aiken, Richard Peck, and Norma Fox Mazer's stories contain threads of humor. Harry Mazer and Joan Lowery Nixon deal with contemporary dangers, including guns and gang activity. Brief author commentaries appear at the end of each story. The balance and diversity of the selections serve to strengthen the book's overall appeal; herein lie tales that will attract a variety of YA suspense and horror fans. The perennial popularity of frightening fiction should also render this collection attractive to reluctant readers.?Mary Jo Drungil, Niles Public Library District, IL

More About the Author

Lois Duncan was born in Philadelphia, PA, and grew up in Sarasota, FL.
She knew from early childhood that she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at age 10 and became published at 13. Throughout her high school years she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen.

As an adult, Lois moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she taught magazine writing for the Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico and continued to write for magazines. Over 300 of her articles and stories appeared in such publications as Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest, and for many years she was a contributing editor for Woman's Day.

Lois is the author of over 50 books, ranging from children's picture books to poetry to adult non-fiction, but is best known for her young adult suspense novels, which have received Young Readers Awards in 16 states and three foreign countries. In 1992, Lois was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award, presented by the School Library Journal and the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association for "a distinguished body of adolescent literature." In 2009, she received the Katharine Drexel Award, awarded by the Catholic Library Association "to recognize an outstanding contribution by an individual to the growth of high school and young adult librarianship and literature."

Six of her novels -- SUMMER OF FEAR, KILLING MR. GRIFFIN, GALLOWS HILL, RANSOM, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU and STRANGER WITH MY FACE -- were made-for-TV movies. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and HOTEL FOR DOGS were box office hits.

Although young people are most familiar with Lois Duncan's fictional suspense novels, adults may know her best as the author of WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, the true story of the murder of Kaitlyn Arquette, the youngest of Lois's five children. Kait's heartbreaking story has been featured on such TV shows as Unsolved Mysteries, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael and Inside Edition. A full account of the family's on-going personal investigation of this still unsolved homicide can be found on the Internet at http://kaitarquette.arquettes.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Night Terror Stories of Shadow and Substance, October 27, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Night Terrors: Stories Of Shadow And Substance : Stories Of Shadow And Substance (Mass Market Paperback)
Genre:Fiction
Three sentence summary:There is this kid named Bo and his friend got murdered by a killer doll.So now the killer doll is coming to get him.So then he realizes it was all a dream. The doll is kind of like Chucky.
What I liked most about the book:I liked the part when that girl got her head sliced by the doll.
What I didn't like and why: I didn't like Bo because he is not that cool like me.
My favorite character and why: My favorite character is the killer doll. Why because he kills people and that is cool to me.
The scene, line,or passage that meant something to me and why:
"Hay watch out", said Bo as he took out his shotgun. The killer doll was right behind his friend as he fired a bullet into his head.
What would I say about this book to someone else:It is a great book and you would probaly wet your pants reading it because it is to scary for the reader. So read it and don't wet your pants.
One question I have after reading this book:Why did the killer doll have to die and couldn't the author make Bo a gangster?
My strongest reason for recommending this book:It has action and brings a chill down your spin.So watch out because the killer doll is real! (Don't wet your pants)
