This book is a re-release of The Night Spider, with a new title, and is a terrific read if you didn't catch it the first time around. In fact, it is one of the best of the series. Full of suspense.

John Lutz is truly a Master of the Suspense Novel. Having recently discovered his novels, I have now read five of them and one thing is certain - they all follow a certain similar path through the discovery and take-down of the serial killers.

He has a formula and even though you know he follows it, you don't really know where he is going until the very end, when he chooses to reveal the last details.

Truly, he keeps you turning the pages, reading the story and the web he weaves, until you are captured, as much as his "bad guys" are!

This, like the rest of his works, is well worth the read. I ended up reading faster and faster, yet trying not to finish it too quickly. No success, as I kept going until the end, at which time I was both satisfied, and disappointed because there was no more to read in this one (of his books).

Read them all - I suggest in chronological order - and you will have enough great summer reading to keep you poolside, or surf side, for your entire summer.

Enjoy!

John Lutz's "Night Spider" (aka "Night Victims") is a typical police on the hunt for a serial killer tale. If you are a fan of John Sandford, Sue Grafton, or Thomas Harris, you've pretty much read this same story countless times, and usually told in better fashion.

"Night Spider" starts out pretty strong as the reader is introduced to a pretty clever and cruel serial killer. We are also introduced to the detectives assigned to catch the killer. The killer known as "The Night Spider" is attacking women by entering their high rise apartments while they sleep, and making them suffer slow, painful deaths by administering multiple small stab wounds. While the killer is pretty original, the detectives are the usual assortment of characters seen so many times, a serial killer specialist brought out of retirement, a young hotshot female detective from New Orleans and her aging partner who is set to retire.

While I really enjoyed the set-up, the first 200 pages or so of "Night Spider", I found the last 200 pages such a tough slog to get through. It seems the set-up was done really well, but the whole second half of the novel was just filled with multiple red herrings, and padded storylines all setting up some really goofy, outlandish twists at the end.

While the novel isn't awful, I'm not sure I would recommend it either. With so many other options out there when it comes to "cops 'n killers", the "Night Spider" just isn't worth your time.

This is the second book by John Lutz that I have read. This book was so hard to put down. I kept thinking I'll just read one more chapter ~ but I just couldn't stand the suspense of knowing was was going to happen next, so I found myself totally involved in this book and almost hated for it to end. This is my second experience reading John Lutz. He is now on my "FAVORITES" list, and I'm sure I will wind up reading just about every book he has written. What an imagination this guy has!!! His books can take you on a wild ride that's scary and fun all at one time ~

This was a good book when it was published first as Night Spider. Changing the title won't make it any better. I really hate it when publishers confuse people by bringing out early works with new titles.

Okay, the book was pretty good and fun to read and interesting all the way through, HOWEVER. The serial killer made a comeback of sorts in the last third of the book or so and it became apparent that he was targeting a particular woman for his ultimate kill. With that though, he completely forgot about the original target of his wrath (the one who entrapped him) who was just dropped from the book. Not only could I not figure out why but it should have been a red flag to the detectives working the case and all the way through who had been pretty sharp witted individuals. I guess I found out later why the chage of targets took place, but it was never incorporated into the plot. My only other complaint was how conveniently the lawsuit was resolved. Talk about luck!!! Other than that, the plot was pretty good and the book moved right along. I've read other book by John Lutz and he seems to be pretty dependable in delivering a nice read.

The story's fast moving and scary as heck. It revolves around a retired Police Captain, Thomas Horn, and his desperate search to find a killer with special military training-a killer who identifies with spiders and acts like one in performing his heinous acts upon his victims, which are usually good-looking women.
I found myself entertained, appalled and frightened as I turned the pages. Lutz is a great story teller.
