Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

NIGHT VISION showcases work by artists and artist collaboratives based in New York and in Brooklyn, who are influenced in some way by contemporary developments in technology, specifically networks, optics, surveillance, and the implications surrounding these industries. The idea for the exhibition, though catalyzed by the events of 9/11, draws on a longstanding preoccupation with media depictions of war and the aestheticization of violence in our popular culture.

As Walter Benjamin once wrote: "The camera introduces us to unconscious optics as does psychoanalysis to unconscious impulses." The word "camera" here might be broadened to include more recent advanced technologies: the science of optics in the service of both military and sociological objectives, and networks as extensions of intelligence and creativity, or as portals for infiltration, surveillance and infection.
