Format: Audio CD
The limits of recording technology in 1970s Senegal are pretty much evident in this record (the famed Paris sessions of 1978 did not provide much relief on this front).
Some of the songs are known to fans because of later versions (esp On Verra Ça and Jin ma jin ma), some are classic numbers (Africando has a version of Futa Tooro, for Yolanda you can check out Laba Sosseh and of course Johnny Pacheco and Pete Conde Rodriguez which also features the actual Spanish lyrics, and Diarabi is a huge classic, see for example the Africubism version).
The music is glorious, but maybe not the best intro to the band. This record will more than satisfy the hardcore followers. Suleymane has a Caribbean air to it, and is one of Issa's great musical manifestos. Liti Liti is classic happy hopping in the vein of Ndeleng Ndeleng, the version of Cabral is tight and Spartan. Attisso on guitar is sooooo different from everybody else, and you get some nice moments, together with great atmospherics and singing on Seeri Koko. I could go on.
Recommended, but for an introduction to Baobab (the greatest Senegal-Cuban band ever) I'd go with Specialists in All Styles.

Everything by Orchestra Baobab is worth having. One the absolutely greatest guitar players in history and a really interesting tenor player. It may not be for everyone, but the fact that one of their albums was called "Pirate's Choice" and was bootlegged in so many versions that most people did not know what the original looked like, should you tell you something.
