Queen's fourth album released in November 1975 is in every way superb, by common consent the jewel in the crown of this inventive and highly creative foursome's extensive back catalogue. The title `A Night at the Opera' comes from a classic Marx Brothers film much loved by the band.
Many excellent reviews here and elsewhere analyse this great album song by song, so this review won't attempt to repeat what others have done so well. Suffice to say that it contains the classic `Bo-Rap', Freddie Mercury's eccentric multi-movement composition considered by many to be the greatest rock single of all time (despite being twice as long as a single release `ought to be') and the first true promotional music video which spawned a million imitators.
But there's a lot more to ANatO than `Bo-Rap'. The album has many memorable songs, from the ethereal `39' (a song about the effects of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity on space travellers, no less) to the quirky `Seaside Rendezvous' and `Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon'; the anthem-like `You're my Best Friend' and Brian May's prog-rock `The Prophet's Song'. The fine integration of multiple-harmonies on the vocal tracks was Queen's hallmark, rarely even attempted by any of their contemporaries.
The 2011 re-master is the one to go for. The album is a classic, the best Queen ever produced.
I had not listened to a lot of Queen when I was younger, but was introduced to them again as I researched a model I was building. Queen has a unique sound with great vocals and some captivating melodies. It has been fun getting a couple of their albums. This is a great listening experience. Other reviewers are more knowledgeable of the music and write more detailed reviews. I just know what I like to listen to, and Queen is on my list. I do recommend this album.
Five +!!!!! I bought this CD and accompanying Autorip so that I now have this "album" as the LP that I bought at 15 when it came out and now have it as a CD and mp3. I had bought it as a CD about 15 years ago but have "lost" it to my son. :) This is a timeless album that will be remembered forever in Rock History!
Possibly one of the BEST albums of all time in Rock music !!! Every song seems to be hand crafted with genius !! lol From Bohemian Rhapsody to I'm In Love With My Car, it appears that this band already were going to be household names, if not one of the biggest names in the biz !!! Love every minute of this album! !!!
In my opinion, even thirty something years after this 'album' first made its appearance, it still rates at the top of the charts! Queen's vocals and A cappella sections show how talented they were at blending voices that run from the lowest of bases to high sopranos. Queen's music blends a symphony of instruments, it is far from just guitars and drums; piano, reed and string instruments, even a harp , make the music as fascinating as its vocals. The lyrics pull on your emotional 'strings' and have some of the most enduring songs that even today's youth would love. It is a timeless CD, worth every penny. You will never tire of Queen!
I was introduced to Queen with Bohemian Rhapsody. I was in awe of their creativity, and had to buy this album right away. I have since upgraded to disc, so that I can have this high quality work for home and car. It is amazing how much Queen's work has lasted and passed the test of time. I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to have the quintessential recording collection. Little surprises are in store. Just when you think you have pegged Queen in to one genre, they use a different style and you are pleasantly surprised. I have most of Queen's recordings, but this one is by far the best.
i did not know Queen did most of these songs. I've always liked them, but just didn't know the band well enough. i have been a fan, but now have deeper understanding of the fun, silly, and just amazing vocal orchestrations.
Brings back happy memories from a long time ago. This is a very high quality production showcasing Queen's amazing and diverse talents. The tracks are so varied that there is something for everyone to like.
