This review is from: A Night at the Pink Poodle (Paperback)
It must be said at once that some time has passed since I read the book. However, the basic feeling of it is still there. The main character, Ikaros, is the typical young, successful businessman - or so it seems. The story is localised in Australia, in the city Gold Coast. For anyone who has ever been there for some period of time, it will be easy to recognize the surroundings. In short we follow Ikaros' rise and fall in a community where image is everything. The young man has lied, fixed and borrowed his way to the top, and maintaining the lifestyle has become more important than really living. Thus, when it is taken away from him the fall is even greater. The author, Matthew Condon, has said that it is pretty much a story about how Aussie men fail to grow up. The humour is pretty black, but still amusing. This novel might seem a bit "pulp" to begin with, but really has dept when you start to analyze it.By the way, Pink Poodle is actually the name of a motel on the Gold Coast. It is situated just south of Surfers Paradise, and reportedly it is just as kitsch as it sounds.
