I am a collector of vampire novels, and after reading a few recommendations, I picked up Nancy Baker's "The Night Inside" (which by the way is also "Kiss of the Vampire)." Do not make the mistake of picking up both books like I did. It is the exact same story.

Ardeth is a graduate student living at college. She just finished a project with two of her friends (also graduate students). She is saddened when one of her friends and ex-lover dies, but that sadness also becomes wariness when the second person she was working on the project with also dies. Also, she felt at one point that she was being followed.

Her fears become reality, when while jogging on campus one morning, she is literally snatched by two men, thrown in a van, and knocked out. When Ardeth recovers she finds herself locked in a cell, with a vampire in another cell next door named Dimitri Rozokov. She finds out that she has been kidnapped to be his food source. She is terrified of the vampire, but as time passes, she realizes she is even more horrified by her sadistic kidnappers (who are making x-rated, snuff films for profit using the vampire).

As the days pass, Ardeth begins to see the vampire Dimitri as a person, and as they get closer, she realizes her and Dimitri will have to come up with a plan to outsmart the kidnappers. But just how far is she willing to go to live?

I don't want to give too much away, but this is an excellent, excellent story. I really enjoyed all of the characters. I would highly recommend.

This is just an early version of Nancy Baker's Kiss of the Vampire. If you can't get this one, you should try the later version. Baker does a great job of showing the slow transition from meek, well-mannered human to vampirism. She really lets you get inside Ardith's head as she makes the transition.

This was an enjoyable vampire novel. Baker does a good job of building up an empathy with Ardith, the novel's central character. Via a set of nasty circumstances she goes from being a conventional-contientious student to a wild-child vampire and sets out for revenge on the people who did this to her. This is the last thing she had ever expected to happen to her - and would never have happened when she was "good". This is a novel I'm glad I've read and I'm looking forward to the sequel "blood and chrysanthemums".

ok - so i will start off by saying i seem to be the exception to the rule - most people loved this book. so this is all just my opinion, and maybe you should take it with a grain of salt, as everyone else seemed to really like the book.

so, the basic story line is ardeth (our heroine) is kidnapped and used for vampire food. basically, her world gets turned upside down and she is learnig to deal with it.

to be honest, for some reason i just couldn't connect with this story. i didn't really care for ardeth or rozokov. they didn't seem to fit together to me. to begin with, i have a problem with rozokov making ardeth a vampire and just leaving her on her own to fend. seems stupid to me. anyway, that was just one of many problems i had with the book.

the story was too unbelievable and based on coincidences for me. i just couldn't deal with it. too melodramatic for me. but obviously a lot of other people liked it, so who knows.

anyway, i wouldn't recommend it personally, but if you do read it i hope you enjoy it. in my opinion, the early laurell k hamilton anita blake books are better, and if you want a light read about vampires (which this book definately is not) try charlaine harris. i also like kim harrison and kelley armstrong for something that is a little less light. anyway, hope you find a book you enjoy.

Baker's first vampire book is not perfect, but despite that it's probably one of the best vampire stories I've ever read. It's worth mentioning that I get perfectly bored with books where the protagonist is vampire just to be cool/erotic/superhuman. I love this book because tells the story of how someone deals with becoming a vampire.

The Night Inside is that rare vampire book that's actually - gasp - well written. I was drawn in by the unusual plot device and impressed by Baker's manipulation of words into things of beauty. Would that more vampire novels were so well written...

Since Anne Rice has retired from writing her series on vampires, I have had very bad luck finding any of worth, until now. Although quite different from Anne's, Nancy Baker has written a very good book, and I enjoyed it very much. Thank you Nancy Baker, I can't wait to read whats next :)

I really loved this book. It is not the usual type of vampire book and kept me guessing about what new and interesting things I would learn about vampires. Although the plot is a little weak this book is definitely for all you vampire fans!

Ardeth Alexander finds herself the victim of a kidnapping, but not just any regular kidnapping, she was kidnapped by a band of men housing an ancient vampire. She is there to be his food for the next few days. But the vampire is not as he seems(well he is tall pale and handsome but that is not what I mean), he is sensitive and not as savage as he appears. Ardeth soon realizes that the only way to live is to make friends with this vampire, the only way to escape lies within their friendship.
Before she story progresses very far Ardeth finds herself a vampire roaming the streets, all alone, looking for revenge and a lost love.
At the risk of giving anything more away I will stop, leave the reading to all of you.

P.S. this is my first review so it is a little weak, I hope it at least helped some.
