3.0 out of 5 stars A fair basic guide to using the nightstick, but police officers may not relate to this text., July 24, 2009
This review is from: Night stick (Paperback)
This book was originally published in 1982 and was written by a well-known martial artist who also has been a police officer. Many of the techniques shown in this book are also taught in various police baton systems. However, there are a number of things that make this book unappealing to most working police officers.
One, most law enforcement officers will not relate to showing the baton techniques while wearing a karate uniform. Two, some of the techniques are too formal looking and may not be practical for the average police officer. Three, some of the defenses shown against an attacker using the baton against the officer are not realistic and fail to follow deadly force procedures. Four, the text fails to teach some type of use of force model for law enforcement officers. To be fair, many of the blocks, strikes, arrest techniques and vehicle extraction methods can be adapted to most traditional police baton systems taught today. The photographs are clear and easy to follow. This book may be used as a reference source when used in conjunction with more common traditional law enforcement baton training.

Rating: 3 stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton).

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Users of the ASP Collapsible Baton, April 18, 2006
This review is from: Night stick (Paperback)
I was trained with the PR-24 side-handle baton (tonfa) and later in jo-jitsu (short stick) and bo-jitsu (long staff). After the military I was trained with the ASP brand collapsible baton for law enforcement. I had read this book by Joseph C. Hess long before my ASP training and found the ASP a wonderfully natural transition. Everything learned in this book was perfect for implementing the ASP. Even after certification in the ASP, this book fills in the gaps and provides wonderful "completeness".

If you are an MP, civilian security officer, or in any other law enforcement community, you will be greatly pleased with this book, particularly in the chapters: Drawing the Night Stick, Defense Against Grabs, and Car-In/Car-Out Techniques.

Written in 1982 and perfect still.
