4.0 out of 5 stars Dee does it again, April 20, 2001
This review is from: Nightbird (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm a police officer with a fifty man department in Idaho. Much about how my department functions and how the NYPD works is very different. But I've also been suprised to see there is more that my dept has in common with the gigantic NYPD. Dee is expert at capturing the feeling of law enforcement, the undeniable truths of being a cop no matter where you're at. this is Dee's best work to date. He takes his characters to new levels, and his writing has achieved a sophistication. It's a daring move in having one of the characters lose his son, but it's effective. Not something that one sees very often in a book franchise. All in all I can't reccommend Dee's books highly enough. I find his work to be engrossing and fast moving, he's one of the authors whose newest book I'm always keeping an eye out for. Try him. I think he'll enjoy his books as much as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best NYPD police stories I have ever read, the real JOB!, January 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightbird (Hardcover)
As a retired cop from the NYPD Ed Dee has taken me back to the old "Job" that I have missed. He shares the NY cops best and worst fears and experiences. This is the most accurate telling of a cops life and the way investigations are conducted. From his descriptions of the station houses from the front desk to the politics at the puzzle palace, (1 Police Plaza)and the real cops good and bad. And I thought me and my old partner were the only guys who called each other "Pally"! An old term we heard many moons ago in an old Bogart movie! If you want to see what it used to be like to pound the beat and investiagte crimes in the Big Apple this is the guy to read...Ed keep'em coming, Pally! I can't what to start my next tour and collar up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nightbird by Edward Dee, December 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightbird (Hardcover)
Having read the 3 previous books by Dee I feel like I know Ryan and I too heard Gillian say I Love You! It's so believable, so real! Danny Eumont was a great addition to the Ryan & Gregory Show! Gregory is a guy I'd like to see on film ( Tommy Lee Jones please step forward! ) with his allergies ( twelve sneezes ) and his maxwell house coffee cans buried in his lawn holding his bribe & shakedown money! Anthony Ryan is lucky to have this gruff, hardnosed guy with the heart of gold- right Pally! His partner Ryan is almost clairvoyant the way he goes into himself to pull things together on the job and at home! His relationship with his wife Leigh & the glimpses into their personal life really rounds out the story- not too much technical stuff- a good balance of life & job. If only Paul Newman were a younger man he'd fit the bill! This would make a helluva movie! A great read! Highly recommended! Amazon needs to list all 4 books together they don't come up as being by the same author and that could be confusing to some people and they might miss out on an excellent read. The authors name went from Ed Dee on the first 3 books to Edward Dee on Nightbird, and when you click on other books by this author it doesn't list the first 3 books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on the Money, January 20, 2000
This review is from: Nightbird (Hardcover)
As a retired NYPD Lt. and a great admirer of Ed Dee's writing I find his latest effort his best. His vignettes on police work jog my memory and I recall the way "The Job" used to be. Dee is by far the best writer of police procedurals today and the heir apparent to Ed McBain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dee Does It Again, December 30, 1999
By
This review is from: Nightbird (Hardcover)
Start at the beginning and work your way through Ed Dee's marvelous stories. You'll be captivated by his "arresting" tales of police work in the Big Apple. You'll fall in love with Anthony Ryan and his beautiful wife Leigh. You'll laugh at his partner--even find yourself counting his sneezes. You become a part of their lives, because Ed Dee's characters jump off the pages at you.

My only complaint is how long we have to wait between books!

Edward Dee is an ex-cop and he writes as such. His stories feel authentic with characters that still own their feelings. I have read all the pop authors of this genre. Dee is among the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, December 16, 1999
By
This review is from: Nightbird (Hardcover)
You can now count Ed Dee among the artists who have contributed to the legend of the Great White Way. With Broadway as his backdrop, Dee paints a scene like no one else. For those of you familiar with the theater district of New York City, you will marvel at Dee's ability to capture the dichotomy that is Broadway: from its cultural elite to its nefarious sleaze; from its inspirational triumphs to its broken dream; from its fine restaurants to its foul hot dog stands. For those of you who have never set foot in the theater district---no need to worry---Dee's vivid prose will have you hearing the tumult and smelling the sewer gas as they rise from the pages. Now throw Detective Anthony Ryan and his partner Detective Joe Gregory into the mix and not since Yankee Doodle Dandy have greater characters graced the boards. Broadway, Ryan, Gregory, Dee....you'll be turning pages until the curtain falls.

This one has it all, folks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, September 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightbird (Hardcover)
In the Times Square area, Manhattan detective Joe Gregory tells his partner Anthony Ryan that he just saw a jumper commit suicide. Just a few weeks from appearing in the chorus of a Broadway production, actress Gillian Stone apparently killed herself. The two detectives have some doubts on her death based on flimsy circumstantial evidence and Ryan swearing she whispered the words "I love you".

Journalist Danny Eumont knew the victim. He strongly feels she would never kill herself. He informs his uncle Anthony that he saw his former lover Gillian last night after four months of not hearing from her. He swears she would never commit the ultimate act of self destruction. Danny thinks Broadway producer Trey Winters had something to do with Gillian's death. However, seemingly tangential individuals not only complicate the investigation, but apparently hold the key to the solution.

The fourth novel in Edward Dee's NYPD series is an interesting tale due to the footwork and bantering of the two lead detectives. Anthony and Joe suffer from the respective losses of their only male offspring. This prejudices their investigation whose goal is not to uncover a killer, or prove a suicide, but to protect Ryan's nephew. The story line is entertaining and the climax pays homage to the French Connection. Mr. Dee makes mayhem in midtown Manhattan that brings the city to life as only seen by an inside.
