this album defines space rock,
This review is from: Nightingales & Bombers (Audio CD)
this is easily one of the top (prog) rock albums i've listened to (though it took some time for it to grow on me) and easily rivals the roaring silence as mann's best work. throughout the album the format of song followed by instrumental is maintained, which only reflects the instrumental capabilities of the band members (mick rogers is easily one of the most underrated guitar players in rock music). the album opens with a bang with springsteen's spirits in the night and what a cover it is! mann apparently is at his best when re-interpreting the songs of others, for the other highlight of the album is the cover of joan armatrading's visionary mountains where mick rogers unleashes one of the most expressive guitar solos i've ever heard. the instrumentals are not fillers but well composed/performed pieces of music which fits perfectly with the mood of the album. the mood and the atmosphere of this album defines space rock!

Wonderful Earth Band CD,

NIGHTINGALES AND BOMBERS is a wonderful CD by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Most of the songs are wonderful, and it helps to prove that Mick Rogers was just as great a lead singer as Chris Thompson. As a bonus cut, you get the version of "Spirits In The Night" with Mick Rogers on vocals. The fact that this album didn't do well commercially in this country is a good reason why music appreciation teachers should assign homework for their students to do over the summer.

I own a good chunck of Manfred Mann's recordings. This is easily my favorite and I believe his best. Believe it, buy it. Your only regret will be the short playing time.

In 1975 when "Spirit in the Night" hit the airwaves, I hit the record store to pick up this gem. The group creates a jazz/rock fusion with this effort that often bears similarities to Pink Floyd. This is the last MMEB project to feature vocalist and guitarist Mick Rogers, and is, arguably, the best album proffered up by the group. If you're only going to buy one Manfred Mann disc, let it be Nightingales and Bombers!

I have the LP and grew up on this in college. I also found this to be a great workout set ! Fast moving up until the near the end. Manfred Mann did the best job on his version of "Spirits in the Night" IMHO. Definately a must have for 70s collections.

Bruce did a great job on this song, But Manfred Mann took it to another level. The same level as B.B.T.L.

The end of an era in group's long history,

This is the last whole album git.Mick Rodgers had been recorded, before re-joining
them in 90's.It's really look like he is leaving, not interested doing this type of music anymore.Anyway there are the mid- seventies, music like that on albums "Messin'" or" Solar fire" is not fashionable, artists are looking in new directions.Manfred Mann's receipt for a succes (mixing his own material with others peoples good songs) is good.It will soon pay with huge hit "Blinded by the lights..."But here we are-not a big hit( "Spirits in the night"),some good music(instrumental)however not as good as previous album "Good earth"(one of my favourits) Four stars because MMEB was a kind underrated band then (telling honestly album deserves only 3 stars)

this was the prelude to the blockbuster "the roaring silence"
which I feel was the breakthru lp. The line-up was the same on both. Both hit singles are spingsteen covers and better than bruce could have hoped for. My favorite cut is the 3rd cut "quittin' time". The haunting guitar solo is one of my all time favorites. These guys can really jam. I have always liked Manfred Mann but this was there best. |
