This movie is no doubt one of the best mystery/horror movies ever made. It is a real television rarity and I appreciated the fact that it wasn't just about blood and gore. I recently viewed it with my aunt, and now she talks about it all of the time.

'Nightmare on the 13th Floor' revolves around Elaine Kalisher, a strong, determined young woman with hopes for her new article on the elegant Wessex Hotel. She is sent by her boss to write the article for a popular travel magazine, but then her article takes on a new subject...
While riding the service elevator, she discovers a floor in between 12 and 14. It is illuminated by gas lamps. As she watches in terror, a man is murdered. But before she can do anything, he is dragged away, blood being stained into the carpet.
However, after telling the hotel doctor about the murder, he doesn't believe her because there is no thirteenth floor. But Elaine must find out if she hallucinated it or what. So, with the help of arrogant Sargent Mathan, she and him go in search of the axe murderer and a thirteenth floor.

Delightfully creepy and even scary at times, Nightmare on the 13th floor is one you must view...or else.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TV rarity - it' s scary., August 22, 1999

I was pleasantly surprised by this eerie TV-movie; it managed to scare me. -This is a rarity on TV these days, ofcourse. It seemed like a mix between those early 80's slasher flicks, and the good old dark house genre. There's plenty of atmosphere, proving very clearly this is all-important in a horror movie. I'd even say it's worth its rediculously high price, but you'd probably still want to wait for a lower price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Movie These Days!, December 9, 2001
A Kid's Review

NIGHTMARE ON THE 13TH FLOOR is a great, television rarity. It managed to grab me and my mother through-out the entire time it was on. The acting is great, the sets are amazing and the suspense is hard on you! Walter Grauman is the director. Starring: Michele Greene, Louise Fletcher, James Brolin.
A writer books into an old Victorian hotel. She is on the elevator when she is dropped off at the 13th floor. There, she witnesses a murder, goes unconcious and wakes up in front of staff. They tell her that she has dreamed all that has happened and that she will be okay. But when guests start to go missing, it's up to Elaine to prove that there is an existing 13th floor.

I really guarantee that if you watch this film once, you'll want to watch it again. Really. One question, for all the Canadian peoples who reviewed this, where on earth did you manage to rent this film?

Nightmare on the 13th Floor is a rather creepy, very riveting and very suspenseful television movie with some cheesy transition effects, "different" cinematography, and a few rather amateur actors.

Elaine Kalisher is a writer for a travel magazine and is sent to the Wessex Hotel in Los Angeles to write an article. While exploring the hotel, the service lift breaks down on an unmarked 13th floor. There she witnesses a murder, but is assured (when she is awake) by the hotel doctor, that there is no 13th floor. What she discovers is actually really disturbing and very creepy.

This is really not the best movie, nor is it even a good TV movie. But, it does deliver some creepy bits, some good suspense and good set design. I like how this movie sort of gave us extremely good hints to solving the mystery of the masked murderer on the 13th floor and still was impossible for us to really guess who it was.

Overall, I'd say this is a decent film, though I'd really like to change a few things if I could. I'd give it three stars for it's overall good production values, even thought it has some flaws. Pretty good.

This is truely a great movie. It had me scared to death. The movie setting takes place in this hotel, but not even the guest knows that there is a 13th floor. It is a closly guarded secret, until a woman stumbles across it......then all hell breaks loose. You have got to see this moive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paramount: Release this TV-movie treasure on DVD!, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Nightmare on the 13th Floor [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Another superb TV-movie thriller effort! This stars Michele Greene (L.A. Law), James Brolin (The Amityville Horror) and of course Oscar winner Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) who is always at her best when she is playing bad. Michele plays Elaine, a magazine reporter doing an article on the Wessex Hotel. Only she will not be reporting on the outstanding customer service and delicious croissants for breakfast. While taking a ride up the service elevator, it jams and freefalls knocking Elaine unconscious. When she awakes, she pulls the doors open only to witness a gruesome murder. She blacks out and thus begins the fun as she trys to figure out who was murdered and why with everyone telling her it was just a dream. What she discovers as the film progresses is nothing she could have ever imagined. Now that she has learned the hotels dark secret, she has put her own life in danger from which she must escape. Great story, suspense, acting and music make this a neat little TV-movie gem that will hopefully see the light of day on DVD soon! This is one of those you can watch repeatedly and never get sick of it. It's that good!

5.0 out of 5 stars My VHS Player Got Sick Of This One!, May 13, 2008

Made for TV horror suspense movie that is not full of gore and special effects that just has an overall creepy feel to it. If you want to see body parts strewn all over the place this isnt for you, however if you like some of the classic creepy films you may really like it. The acting is ok, a few charachters really stand out but nothing award winning, however there is just something about this movie that I absolutly love, when i was younger i would wear out the VHS tape and stay up to catch this on USA up all night. I think it has something to do with the creepy 13th floor and the old gaslights and funky wax cylinder music, watching the charachters go down the hall made me feel like I was playing Silent Hill. I would really like to see this released on DVD so I can have a good copy rather than the one I digitized with my ATI tuner card.

I was surprised to find that this made-for-cable hotel chiller was creepy...even scary. Although acting may be a little dry, the special effects and action in this mystery make up for the acting. This movie must be good as my mom even likes it. This is a very great item. I love it...buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned Horror At Its Best!, June 5, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nightmare on the 13th Floor [VHS] (VHS Tape)
9/10"This means that Nightmare on the 13th Floor" is a good movie especially for fans of the genre.

Nightmare on the 13th Floor is a movie that remained with me

after I watched it on TV. The 13th Floor and James Brolin make

the movie devilishly good and wickedly scary. The acting is

good, although some people in the movie were amateur like Kerry

Noonan as Gale Myers. Michele Greene, James Brolin and John

Karlen all show good spirit in their roles.

This movie should not be missed and is very rare. So order it

here from Amazon.com like I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good -- But doesn't show anything!, August 9, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nightmare on the 13th Floor [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have no idea whether it is because I watched this movie on television and it was edited, but there is know visual violence in this movie! I mean, there is the odd chop off somebody's fingers and there is a bit of blood. But, when you think an intense part is coming up, you see an ax raise and then come down quick and then the scene ends and that is it! Come on! But otherwise, I love this movie! I love especially the plot. This movie is about a woman who comes across a hotel and plans to write a book about it. One day at the hotel, she went in the elevator and accidentally stumbled across a thirteenth floor on the hotel! There she discovers a psycho killer on the lose up there, but hotel staff try to convince that the woman's story is not true because there is no thirteenth floor on the hotel! For those who'd like to know what I'd rate this movie in MPAA ratings, I'd rate it a PG because there is bearly a gorey, violent, visual part through-out, which is good in a way for a children's first horror movie. Excellent choice for a first horror flick! Plus, for a second I'd recommend Poltergeist III (1988). Excellent movie!
