Bathed in darkness, & with a decidedly eerie atmosphere permutating into many morbid manifestations, the player is brought into a horror world of gore & mysticism. The scenery is gloriously Gothic, covered in shadow... with many lurking abominations therein...

You have the choice of being one of two characters: "Father Ignacius Blackward, a man of God combatting Evil", or "Nadia F., a Microbiologist." The latter character, who's father was murdered mysteriously, probably as a plan of "The Brotherhood of Hecate", a mysterious Dark order dedicated to dominating the earth using these mutant monsters. They are led by "Adam Crowley", former "legitimate" scientist who now masterminds the secret Brotherhood of Hecate. Unfortunately, their bodies were immolated in the Fire of 1666. Crowley only desired to create a race of "Supermen" {...can you say Ubermenschten?}; but things didn't quite go as planned. Still, this was still a great opportunity to realize their plans anyway.

The plot is basically based around their Grimoire, which was written by "Pepys", a mystic / Black Magic Magician. The Legend is quite intriguing, & quite ingenious, actually.

Werewolves, fire-spewing Demons, Spider-like creatures, Zombies, & knife-wielding "faceless men" are only some of the inhabitants of this truly nightmarish dimension.

Nightmare Creatures presents a forboding challenge for all those who wish to enjoy a bit of Eustress, in this descent into a veritable Hell...

An excpetionally well thought out game that is hindered by some slight problems which prevent this game from getting a 5 star rating in my book. The jumping certaintly is one of the worst parts of this game and certainly does help to make this game less enjoyable. However the atmosphere and the mood created are second to none as you roam the streets and Catacombs of England searching for the dark genius Alex Crowley. While most of the gameplay relies heavily upon hack and slash elements, and arcade style gameplay it is in the overall execution that this game succeeds. The creators have done a fine job of recreating the dark times which plaque the game world and have created some of the best monsters in a horror videogame, standing stride for stride with games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, althogh Silent Hill does have this game topped in terms of sheer terror and horror that is created from the link between the player and the monsters, as truly Silent Hill's monsters are a perversion of reality, and some of the most intriquing monsters ever created. The sequel to this game does fall a little bit short of what I would have expected, although I do enjoy the finishing moves that you are able to execute in NC2. Definitely worth picking up, especially because of the cheap price that you can pick it up for, the game seems to be so inexpensive on this sight that you probably will be paying more for the shipping than for the game itself. By the way the best time to play this game is right before Halloween, as that was when it was originally released, and I'm sure the creators intended that the season be around you when playing this game, just an idea though. Thanks for ya time ya all. Yeah yeah.

Believe me, this is nowhere near the worst game of all time. It is strictly an average game. It breaks no new ground, offers very little in the way of new and fresh adventures, and it's explicit blood and guts get tiresome after a while. But where it excells is in the horror aspect, with well animated and truely frightning monsters lurking in the back alleys, there is much to fear.

Set in Victorian London (circa 1840), you assume the role of either a preist or a young student apprentice. The former excells with strength while the other excells at agility. Both offers skills essential to survival. Your task is to defeat all the monsters that an evil scientist has unleashed. Cliched as the story is, the action is fun for any fan of "Resident Evil" or "Tomb Raider", with the action in the third person similar to the other survival horror games.

The graphics are nice, but dark and moody. This makes the gaming experience unpleasant over the long run. The music is nicely done, and reminds me of the moods set in "Silent Hill". The action is nice, and will please gamers who crave action and painting walls with your enemies. But in the way of deep story or character development, you may want to look elsewhere.

Not very bad, but not very good either.

I decided to buy Nightmare Creatures on a whim, there were no other things to get and I was bored. This game, besides being frustrating at times, was pretty in depth, dark, gloomy, and pretty entertaining. I would say it's worth a purchase if you can look over the minor technicalities.
In NC, you can choose from 1 of 2 characters, and it's pretty much a third person slasher that goes level by level of hacking and slashing your way through some pretty cool enemies and genuinely creative levels in what seems to be 19th century England.
It's a lot like Final Fight in third person, except that you can perform different combo's, gaining each one each level. Otherwise you can just tap on the attack buttons and use the basic moves. I loved using the combo's, and if you can button mash different combo's you'll discover them on your own and not need the game to give them to you every level. Each character has his and her own selection of cool martial art moves and it's awesome to see them go into effect. The enemies are hacked into various body parts like arms, legs and heads being amputated. Another great feature is the level design, they're so detailed and gloomed up with fog, rain and dirt that it makes it so much fun to simply run around and explore everything. It does look somewhat grainy and pixels to become apparent the closer you become to objects, but this gives the game an even darker look you can really appreciate. The levels are also very unique from one another giving the player some great variety.
What I didn't like about the game for one was the controls, and I think everyone can back me up on this when I say they're too choppy. Well, it's hard to say, the control's themselves aren't choppy, each one executes smoothly, the problem lies in the character's position in the level. It's like your characters body feels too "big" for the level and this causes strange perception problems when it comes to pulling off jumps over certain obstacles and defending yourself against your enemy. You will die a few times in frustration before you really get the hang of the control scheme of the game. This will also cause you to die A LOT during the final level of the game and especially against the final boss.
Overall, I liked this game a lot. I had a lot of fun playing it through and I would go through it again because I beat it a long time ago and I don't remember too much of it. If you can look over these few technicalities you will definitely enjoy this one for a long time. Also, since you can get it used at most places now, I'd say pick it up right away, you won't regret it.

This is a fun game.I like the items like the gun that kills monsters one hit. This game is different than most games where you kill monsters. Usually you have like a gun or something and just blow their heads off. You can do that on this game, but you can also deliver a little hand-to-hand combat. It surprised me that you can fight the monsters with your bare hands. At first I thought you just fought them like in matches or something like you do on Mortal Kombat and other fighting games . This game has good graphics and is fun. If you like severing monsters and zombies limbs, you'll like this game.

Nightmare Creatures appealed to me as a Victorian reenactor and a gamer. Unfortunately, its flaws are greater than its charms.

The game is closer to Tomb Raider than Resident Evil (the GameSpot review notes both of them); but it looks like the relatively choppy TR1 than later, smoother, installments. Control is hard to master. There are some moves that I never got to perform, though I practiced as much as was possible in the time alloted.

Time, in fact, is where this game shows its worst aspect. One of the pleasures of 3D games is exploring these lush and visually interesting worlds. And, indeed, you're encouraged to look around to find the powerups. Yet you also have to kill a constant number of critters lest your "adrenaline" run out! These two goals work against one another (and, as well, against your ability to practice complex moves). Because enemies don't repopulate, you have to watch your meter carefully to maximize the effect that your kills have and try to get in some exploration at the same time. Once all the enemies are gone (and there's no good way to know this), you have to run for the exit. Time-limit games are seldom a good idea; time-limit adventure games are even worse.

And it's "Aleister Crowley," not "Adam." Maybe Adam was Al's father? Nothing to that effect in the manual! Having an offhanded historical reference helps many works, from Flashman to H.P. Lovecraft's work; but at least we could have had a little more historical accuracy.

Good points: The cut scenes are well done. This was a good game to cheat my way through, but it was far too disappointing to attempt honing my skills on. For my money, the Tomb Raider games (with the exception of parts of #3) are a much better buy.

Ok i will start with the bad. The controls and camera angles are a bit jumpy and hard to work with. Now the good. This is just an extremely fun game. Enough said!

I could only get to the first boss. Don't get me wrong I had fun with this game, but many factors killed it for me.

Most noticebly is the controls. The controls in this game are aweful! You have no idea how many cheep deaths the controls caused me. Its the main reason why I could never get pass the first boss. This is an extreme problem when you're facing more than one enemy because the controls won't respond when you need them to. The camera doesn't make things any easier. When platforming the jumping controls and camera will often cause cheep deaths because you can't see where your going or jump at an angle that causes you to fall off.

Another issue I had is that when you get a game over you start all the way to the beginning of the game. Extra lives are also hard to find. This wouldn't be so bad if the controls weren't so bad.

The plus side though is that the music is wonderful and there are moments that are creepy AND SCARY. I would love it if they remade this for the Wii, Xbox, or PS3 with better controls and handling, but due to how long its been I don't see that happening.

Overall a blast from the past for 3rd Person Gore, brings back memory's and surprisingly looks good for such an old game on my Playstation 3. Recommended for anyone looking for an easy hack and slash Dawn of the Dead type game.

Not as fun or captivating as other great play station titles. I'd pass unless you get a good deal on this game. Good deal = less than $10.
