A great companion piece collection.,

This disc contains the scores for the first two Nightmare films. Both are worthwhile, but Bernstein's score, with its sighing, whispering voices, and electric pounding heart sounds, is the more memorable of the two and the real reason this disc gets five stars. Young's score is a nice and creepy orchestral piece of work but, with the exception of an outstanding opening theme and the interesting use of what seems to be, of all things, whale song, is rather unmemorable. Especially in comparison to Bernstein's whopper of an opening. Nonetheless both are highly recommended treats for horror score fans.

I bought this soundtrack way back in 1992, i have had it ever since, the only part i'm dissapointed with is in the film there's a scene where Nancy comes home from talking with Glen on the riverbridge, she comes home & sees the bars on the windows & says "Oh gross"! the music that plays in that scene wasn't on the soundtrack, but other than that, the soundtrack was very creepy, but absoutely brilliant,it's music i like to play when i like to drift off to my own world. A real winner of a soundtrack.

What can I say, I love HORROR MOVIE soundtracks adn this is just a classic to me. Since I also watch the movies almost every day and am a fan of the scores it was a must have for me. IF you are looking for a soundtrack with music this is not it, but if you like movie scores then it's worth it.

Strange that this is only an import. The complete soundtracks to the first two Nightmare on Elm Street discs is a much better than average horror score disc.Charles Bernstein is not well known, but his spare electronic score is creepy in the right places, and he created the famous theme for the series. Christopher Young's score is, I think, the stronger of the two. Young is a very solid composer who would go on to write the scores to Hellraiser and Hellbound, two of the better horror scores to come along. His work here is excellent, brooding, very moody, and effective. Reminded me of Horner's (still unreleased) score to Wolfen, and it certainly aided the film along the way. Freddy's Dead is one of the least popular sequels, yet it's very expressionistic and moody, and kept Freddy off-screen enough so he wasn't a wise-cracking anti-hero as in later films. Highly recommended for fans of the two first flicks, this is a great disc for soundtrack buffs, much more satisfying than Freddy's Favorites, which jams parts of at least five different movies (and composers) on one disc.

Fantastic,

First of all Ricardo Lopes how could Christopher Young be called for Nightmare 2 because of his work on Hellraiser if Hellraiser wasn't even made yet? Nightmare 2 came out in 1985 and Hellraiser came out in 1987. Now i know that the cd comes out before the film does but not two years before and it didn't even take them two years to make the film. That just really shows how much you know!Anyway the score for Nightmare 2 is orchestral and the first is not its electric. Both scores are fantastic I give them both a 5. Really creppy too.

I was going to buy Nightmare 1 & Nightmare 2 soundtrack separately, but I found this to be a better deal instead.
It contains ALL of the tracks from both CD's so you don't have to pay Double or Triple the price for it. Nightmare 1 has the perfect creepy score to it. While Nightmare 2 doesn't have the traditional Bernstein music cues, it's still an Eerie score nonetheless. I'd definitely recommend this one above all else, unless you want to spit out more cash for separate releases. Definitely a perfect soundtrack for HalloweeN Night.

Young's done better,

I have to admit that I had wanted Chris Young's score for Nightmare 2 for a long time. I'm a fan of the composer and some of his work I consider among the best of film scores. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. I don't really think the use of whale song is inspired or creepy. It's just kind of intrusive since I recognize it for what it is. There is some really good string writing though, so it's not a total loss. The same can't be said for Charles Bernstein's music for the original. Other than the opening track, I find his score annoying and terribly dated. I can only recommend this CD for die-hard Chris Young fans.

Great Bernstein, not so good Young!,
By Ricardo Lopes Moura (Lisboa, Portugal) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Nightmare On Elm Street I & II (Audio CD)
The score of the original Freddy movie is the greatest! Almost nobody knows Charles Bernstein, but his theme for "A Nightmare..." is surely as unbelievably frightning as any of John Carpenter's hit themes. His use of computers and piano show a sensibility for the theatrical that you would not believe. most of the movie's scaryness are owed to this man's talent in composing. As for Christopher Young's "A Nightmare... II", all I can say is that it is as bad as the film itself. Young was called because of his fantastic and chilling score for Clive Barker's "Hellraiser", but he doesn't deliever for Freddy. Best go for his latest compositions for action films like "Entrapment" or "Hard Rain". they are a lot better. "Hellbound" is also a big deal. The best thing in this 2 in 1 CD is Charles Bernstein's score. He really pushes Freddy's crimes one step forward. Please do more, Charles!
