Grade 4-8-- Twelve-year-old Molly was looking forward to a relaxing and interesting month-long stay with relatives while her mother traveled in the Orient. Although she and her aunt's new husband have never met before, they hit it off immediately. But, for some unspoken reason, her cousin, Glendon, seems to resent her visit and does his best to make Molly feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Then, when his stepmother becomes deathly ill, Glendon blames Molly. Left alone on the ranch while Aunt Karen is in the hospital, Molly and Glendon discover that someone is rustling valuable llamas. They become involved in an action-packed adventure which culminates in a near-fatal battle. Some of Molly's actions and miscalculations seem designed to increase suspense and are a bit unbelievable and melodramatic, but they do not detract from a first-rate thriller. It is refreshing to meet a heroine who doesn't depend on anyone else and who must overcome her own fears, take risks, and use ingenuity to save her cousin's life. More About the Author

I've published 45 books; all but two are for children. I wrote magazine articles, short stories, and plays for many years before I discovered that what I like best is to write books for kids.
When I was twelve, I was paralyzed with polio. I made almost a full recovery but I remember that time of my life so clearly that it's easy for me to write from the viewpoint of a twelve or thirteen-year-old.
I'm always thrilled when one of my books wins a state young reader award, because I know those awards are voted on by children.
I am a widow who was married for 48 years. I have two grown children and four grandchildren. I live on a small wildlife sanctuary near Mt. Rainier National Park and I often have deer and elk in my yard.

I actually read this book way back in 1993 as a lad of thirteen. Then, about two or three years later I got an urge to read it again. Of course, that was back when internet access for us blind folks was little more than a pipedream, so there was no posting online reviews. Anyway, I was hooked from the beginning.
Twelve-year-old Molly Newman is looking forward to a relaxing vacation on her Aunt Karen's llama ranch. Though Molly and Uncle Phil had never met before, they hit it off immediately. But Glendon, Phil's distant son, seems to strongly dislike Molly for a reason he refuses to disclose. Within days of Molly's arrival, Aunt Karen becomes desperately ill, forcing Phil to stay with her at the hospital, leaving Molly and Glendon alone on the ranch. Glendon, of course, blames Molly for his stepmother's illness. It is at this time that Molly discovers that a valuable, pregnant llama has been stolen. From there, things only get worse as the thief catches Molly and Glendon snooping around the barn and abandons them on a mountainside immediately following a deadly avalanche. Abandond on the mountain and separated from her cousin, Molly embarks on a daring and dangerous effort to find and rescue Glendon before he freezes to death. In the process, she learns a shocking truth about the identity of their attacker and a disturbing secret from Glendon's past, and the reason for his inexplicable resentment towards her.
All in all, it's the perfect adventure story. It might even make a good movie.

Nightmare Mountain by Peg Kehret, is a great book. It is a mystery that could really come true.
It is about a girl who goes and visits her aunt, uncle, and cousin. She finds out that her cousin hates her, her aunt goes to the hospital(uncle stays with aunt), and someone steals their animals.
The parts I liked best in the book were the shocking parts. Another one of my favorite parts is when Molly accidently breaks her cousin's model ship. This is a really great book.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

I definitely reccomend this book to anyone that likes adventure! If you need a good book, this is a good choice! Molly goes to her Aunt and Uncle's house because her mother is off on a business trip. Her cousin, Glendon, strongly dislikes Molly because she reminds her too much of Gladys, Glendon's twin sister, who no longer lives with them, but lives with their real mother. Glendon hated Gladys because their mother treated her like an angel and didn't pay any attention to him whatsoever. A man, uncle Phil's brother, takes advantage of the llamas when aunt Karen is rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night. The man stole their favorite llama, Merrylegs, and quickly took off. Molly goes to the top of the hill where the llamas are stored and meets the man up there. Will she return back in one piece? Read this book at your local library to find out! Enjoy!!
