Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—First there were books, then there was a television show, now there are books adapted from the television show. The Time Warp Trio is fast becoming its own brand! In the first graphic novel, adapted from an episode's teleplay, the boys go back to 1816. Frankenstein's monster has come to life and is out for revenge. He's after Mary Shelley, the woman who created him and made him so ugly. The boys (Joe and Sam minus Fred) must again use the time-traveling book to set things right. While there's nothing new in this novel, the dialogue and characters are still funny, and the full-color pictures are almost snapshots of the episode. Fans of the series and the show will enjoy the format. Libraries with lots of "Trio" requests will want to make room for this one.—Sadie Mattox, DeKalb County Public Library, Decatur, GA

From Booklist

Scieszka's popular Time Warp Trio series has been adapted into an animated television series; now HarperCollins is publishing graphic-novel adaptations of the series episodes, using screen captures of the animation to illustrate the books. In this first volume, Frankenstein's monster confronts Joe and Sam in Joe's house, demanding that they help him locate his creator, Mary Shelley, so he can learn why she made him so ugly. They use Joe's special book to warp back to 1816 and find Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley, who are staying with Lord Byron. Then Joe loses his book, and the boys must soothe the angry monster and find the book so they return back home and prevent history from being changed. Although the illustrations are in full color, they tend to be a bit flat and fail to convey a real sense of movement. Fans of the print and television series, however, will still enjoy this reworking, and the book might lead reluctant and struggling readers to Scieszka's original stories. Kat Kan

Interesting but not like an original Trio book. This seems to be a graphic representation of the tv show. Not as good as the original books even if you like graphic stories (comic books). My 10 yr old loves comics but was disappointed with this.
