4.0 out of 5 stars A new axe grinder of metallic proportions emerges
Well, it is obvious that the first person to review this title is not a metal fan and fails to appreciate the merit of this band and the impact they will surely stir within the metal community. Quite a shame, too, given that Eidolon dishes up much to offer the ear of the metal fanatic, and more importantly, gives rise to a shining new star for metaldom. That star is...

3.0 out of 5 stars A confused (but pretty good) metal band
Confused is the first word that comes to mind when reviewing Eidolon. After listening to their "Nightmare World" disc a couple times, I'm not certain they know what kind of metal they want to play. That star is Glen Drover,on guitar, who provides one of the most stellar displays of crunch not heard in the power metal community since the likes of Dimebag on Vulgar Display of Power, or most recently, Metal Hero Jon Schafer of the mighty Iced Earth.

From the galloping riffs of the chorus to the title track, all the way through to the 11 minute plus closer "Dreamscape", Drover hammers out some of the finest muscular, meat and potatoes, renewing the "fine art of shredding" riffage this side of the last disc Bobby Gustaffson recorded with Overkill! And I mean it. Just check out the steamrolling intro riffs of "Eye of illusion" or the monolithic chunks of "Fortress of red," two of the album's highlights which showcase a crunch highly influenced by King and Hanneman. On "Fortress", the prolific riffs cascade over mid-range vocal muscle and double bass thudding, reminiscent of the Hell Awaits and South of Heaven era Slayer, much like the brow beating Drover again dishes out at song's end of "Dreamscape." Now, don't mistake Eidolon for a Slayer clone, because while their overall sound at times explodes forth with the same ferociousness as the L.A. master's, they are predominately power metal. While occasionally straddling the fences of early 80's thrash, the speed is only turned up once in the middle of "eye of illusion." Herein lies my only gripe with "Nightmare World." I like traditional power metal as well as anyone, but Eidolon excells in the crunch department and they come off much more credible when they are in steamroller mode. In fact, while none of the songs on the major label debut are filler, some are strengthened single handedly by Drover's intense guitar tactics, like "Repulsion", with a fine solo break, and the break down in "Nocturn Aeternus", which otherwise is close to suffering from the usual power metal "cheese disease! "

Overall, the rest of the band display sound competency with their instruments, and vocalist Brian Soulard will do, with his mighty mid range belting, but it is apparent that he is not in league with the Bruce's or the Rob's, or the Matthew Barlow's, but then how many front men are? Brian's lack of high range does not detract from the overall power of Eidolon, and anyway, an overly talented singer may take away from the true power of this ensemble, which is (surprise) the chops of Glen Drover.

Overall, Eidolon has unleashed a mighty fine plate of renewed power metal that is played with talent and skill, and finished off with a great production (done by Drover also! ) which should appeal to fans who can't get enough of the likes of Iced Earth, Nevermore, Lefay, and the great ones like Slayer, Overkill, and Metal Church. Many great things can be expected to come from this bunch of up and comers in the new metal realm!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Power Metal, April 26, 2004
This review is from: Nightmare World (Audio CD)
Well Eidolon sure are good musicians! If you like Power Metal a la Nevermore with a mix of Slayer, you'll love this. They remind me a bit of Angel Dust too but a little faster. I like the way they do the guitar riffs. Eidolon sometimes sounds Trashy, sometimes more Power, sometimes more Doomy, but the way they do it is plain awesome. At first it might sound too mixed up but after a couple of spins, everything gets pretty good! But if you like Happy Power Metal, stay away from this one, it's probly too heavy. Personnally, I appreciated it, but that's just me, I'm kinda opened when it comes to Power Metal.
If you wanna check out some songs, check out Lunar Mission, Noctem Aeternus, Eye of Illusion and the opener Nightmare World.

I love Eidolon. The Music is great. All of their stuff gets me so hyped. If you love metal, and want some great music in your collection... get this album.. and all others that you can find. you wont be dissapointed. Glen and Shawn Drover are like the best team in music, that anyone could hear. The style is metal but it has a totally new sound to it.. it a revalation in metal. the riffs are in your face and yet just there to make the songs. everything works into everything.. if you like King Diamond. check this out. As well as Infernal Majesty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Precision power-thrash metal!!, April 3, 2010
By
This review is from: Nightmare World (Audio CD)
I wish I discovered this group LONG AGO as I happened to come across them on here & lo and behold I find out that Shawn & Glen Drover currently of Megadeth fame are the founders & chief song writers of this killer band! Simply put Eidolon doesn't offer anything that you havn't heard before but 'Nightmare World' is a power-thrash gem that shouldn't be overlooked with razor sharp riffs, heavy drumming, and even beautiful melodies from time to time. This CD reminds me a lot of the group Sanctuary or even early day Tad Morose.

4.0 out of 5 stars something to appreciate, April 8, 2004

eidolon is a good band, the riffs are awesome and the druming is mad, they are the type of band that you wish you could keep to yourself....they play good music and have songs that make you think beyond the metal spectrum. Nightmare world had at leat 4 songs that i have never imagined that would have existed. Eidolon has talent and i back them up all the way. They arn't thrash or rock, just straight metal. I thought they had an advanced sound like Jester's Race (InFlames). Eidolon broadens metal or even brings it back to its roots. Nightmere World is worth the buy because it takes metal to a higher level of appreciation.

3.0 out of 5 stars A confused (but pretty good) metal band, May 27, 2001

Confused is the first word that comes to mind when reviewing Eidolon. After listening to their "Nightmare World" disc a couple times, I'm not certain they know what kind of metal they want to play. And sometimes that's good. At times, they come across as a thrashed-up Queensryche; for some reason, vocalist Brian Soulard keeps making me think of Tate. At other times, they're somewhat of a dumbed-down early era Anthrax or Testament, but not as chunkariffic. And still at other times, they drop into lo-fi, sludgey as hell Sabbath impersonators.

What this all means is you've got an extremely diverse and varied metal album. However, it also means that there's no flow and little passion poured into just one of those styles so that the songs would be more memorable. Looking back, only "Lunar Mission" and "Dreamscape" stand out as great songs. Worth a try for fans of speedier thrash and prog-metal vocals, otherwise, pass on by.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is the other Eidolon, July 15, 2000

This is not the group with the trademarked name of Eidolon. This is a punk-type group with words whose imagery disgusted me. If you were looking for the Eidolon group whose intelligent songwriting and impressive acoustic musicianship is played on National Public Radio and the like, don't make the mistake I did when I preordered "Eidolon's next album" -- it isn't this group. I read the words to the first song in the little book that comes in the CD and knew something was very wrong. If you're "into" punk, you'll want to avoid the Eidolon I was looking for. Good luck sorting out the confusion.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring Progressive Metal, March 12, 2002

If u like Progressive Metal, then u should like this album.I figured that since Glen Drover was in the band(Glen played guitar on King Diamond's "House of God" CD),Eidolon might sound similiar to King Diamond.I was wrong, this is just an "Average" Progressive Metal album that was very boring to listen to.The only highlights on the album are the "Title Track" and some good guitar riffs and solos. If u r looking for some better Progressive Metal, check out Mercyful Fate,Fates Warning, or Iced Earth.
