Great!,
This review is from: Nightmare of You (Audio CD)
Okay, so this isn't going to be a substantial review. But, I have to say I thought this album was really good.
The most obvious strength of this band are the vocals. Hummable melodies with lyrics of deep vocabulary (eg - "in such arduous pallor"), all delivered by one of the most listenable voices I've heard in awhile. I saw a quote saying NOY sounds like The Killers mixed with Green Day, and that is a pretty good comparison vocally. As for the band, they offer a welcome change in that they don't use a whole lot of distortion on their guitars. Rather, you have the lush sounds of clean electric guitars; something which I personally love. Their bass player has a very good tone as well, keeping it tight but throwing in a few showy fills here and there. Finally, the drummer is a solid player. Like his bass counterpart, he focuses mainly on keeping a backbeat, but has a few subtle drum tricks in his tool bag. I think NOY has a really bright future. Although a collection of good songs; there aren't any obvious smash singles on this CD. Still, these guys have all the ingredients to be huge. If they can write a good radio song on their next album, I think they might take off. But... I'm biased. I love pop-rock like this.

Great record.,
This review is from: Nightmare of You (Audio CD)
I discovered this record while browsing music on iTunes, bought the physical disc, and was not disappointed. With the exception of the country-tinged song ("Marry Me"), the songs on this record are all GREAT power pop, replete with hooks and 80s-style melancholia. The overall sound is a mixture of the Decemberists and the Smiths, and the singer seems to channel Morrissey in certain vocal stylings/periodic yelps. The song "I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard," is a modern-day "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out."
This album brings back what it was like to be an angst-ridden, black-clad adolescent in the 80s, when everything was about pure, dramatic, John Hughes-ian romantiscm.

Looks like emo. Sounds like... The Smiths?,

Some bands are really good at hiding their influences. Some bands shut themselves up from all outside music while they write and record their music, so that nothing seeps in. Rarely can you, upon first listen, know exactly what artist was stuck on repeat on every single member of the bands iPod. "I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard" is definitely one of those songs. From start to finish, it has The Smiths written all over it, with more to spare! Just when I thought it didn't get anymore obvious after hearing "The Dears". "Nightmare of You" however, tops even that. Don't get me wrong sounding exactly like Morrissey or The Smiths would with an emo sounding singer is actually more enjoyable than one would imagine. It's very refreshing to hear a band that by all appearances and history should be hardcore, and yet has a distortion deprived mix. Not many bands can pull off the whole emo look with 80's pop sound. Hats off.

its soo worth it,
This review is from: Nightmare of You (Audio CD)
A friend recommended Nightmare of You to me and i cant stop listening to them. A surprisingly catchy use of instruments, slightly sensual lyrics (especially "Thumbellina",the dirtiest song you'll ever hear), and the amazing "pterodactyl" screech absolutely unique to frontman Brandon Reilly, all rolled up in mix of emo/indie/alternative sounds = this fantasticaly refreshing Long Island musical force. With song names like "I want to be buried in your backyard" and "In the bathroom is where i want you", NOY induces feelings of dark intimacy, somewhat in the likeness of AFI or My chemical romance, but with a much lighter sound. Get out and get a copy of this amazing album, which hopefully will lead to a slew of others to come by this awsomely original group.

This is what happens when pop is done right! None of this plastic teenybopper fluff that we get bombarded with ala Ashlee Simpson, American Idol winners, etc etc. This is what happens when bands get together with great, timeless influences and craft a gem of an album with more thought and feeling in one verse than anything you'd be apt to hear on MTV. So what if they borrow some ideas or stylings from Morrissey or the Cure. Is that really so bad? This album is just freakin' beautiful from beginning to end, not one duff track or bit of filler material to be found. Wow, what a concept! If only more bands put as much work into their albums. Even Belle & Sebastian would be envious of this one. The best Britpop album to come around in years, and they're not even British! For fans of Morrissey/the Smiths, the Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Orange Juice, the Mighty Lemon Drops, etc. Get this now.

Breath of Fresh Air,
This review is from: Nightmare of You (Audio CD)
One of my friends introduced me to the song "Dear Scene, I Wish I Were Deaf," which I instantly fell in love with. I decided that I just had to buy the album when it came out, and I'm glad I did.
This album is great. Amazing, even. The guitars and drums mesh so well, and it's very clean--very little distortion, which is different from most bands today(I believe a preveious reviewer said the same thing). Everything is very catchy. Vocals, melodies, everything gets stuck in your head. The lyrics are very well-thought out and all the lyrics of each song fit very well, but they would be almost nothing without the singer who delivers the words so well. He is one of the best vocalists that I've ever heard. But enough gushing. Long review short: amazing album, go out and buy it.

This album is amazing from start to finish. There isn't a bad song on it. Somehow they manage to do pop music without sounding the least bit lame. Their lyrics are extremely honest, and the singer's voice is outstanding. The cd is flawless, and whether you are into 80's pop, indie, or pop-punk you will love it as long as you have some taste. It's sort of like what All-American Rejects tried to do on their first album, but way, way better.
And the reviewer below me is correct: Nightmare of you does not sound like Fallout Boy or Panic! at the disco, because those bands have very little talent. The talent is dripping from this cd, which may cause confusion to someone hoping to hear Fallout Boy.

Utterly Amazing,

This is one heck of an album. I saw Nightmare Of You live and knew I had to have their album despite only hearing the songs once. I wasn't disappointed. The singles "I Want To Be Buried In Your Back Yard" and "The Days Go By Oh So Slow" are catchy and stick in your head for days. However is there is more to the album than those tracks,"In The Bathroom Is Where I Want You" is a possible single contender, however a stand out track is "Dear Scene, I Wish I Were Deaf" which is all about the trendy hipsters and such. The album tracks all work well together, and this band and this album are sure to be a huge success in the UK eventually.
If you want to know who the band sound like then there are big comparisons to The Smiths, they are also incredibly indie.

It's a good album, stop complaining,

Of course, I say that to those of you who make comments like "well it's almost a four star album but *this* lyrical line doesn't make sense."
True but I have one word for you: Oasis. People loved them and hell, they intentionally made no sense. The band actually made fun of people who tried to find meaning in their lyrics. Like that other pop group, "Nightmare of You" has a talent for writing catchy songs. This is, in a sense, the appeal of the album. It doesn't take three or four plays before we start to enjoy it but neither does the album burn out after six or seven. Ultimately, this is an album with strong replay value, even if it's forgettable in the context of a generation. It's worth the money you'll put down on it for that alone.

Lush Imagery,

Wow! I was totally blown away by this. People complain the lyrics don't make sense-- but it's poetry, I mean check out TS Elliot's poems for chris sake. And hello-- about the mispronounciations-- those are done to fit the rhyme-- it's a time honored tradition
The imagery these songs conjure in my mind is so fascinating, exotic and wonderfully visual, NOY are just awesome, they can sing and play there instruments and the lyrics aren't just some mass produced studio BS. Keep up the good work |
