Editorial Reviews

Review

"[Nightmares!] succeeds at scaring and amusing in equal measure...[It's] sweet, charming, and imaginative."-Kirkus Reviews

"Segel...and Miller build an entertaining, cartoony world full of scary (but not too scary) monsters, silly jokes, plucky kid heroes, and a cinematic plot that trundles onward to a satisfying conclusion, with a promise of adventures to come."-Booklist

About the Author

Jason Segel used to have nightmares just like Charlie, and just like Charlie, he's learned that the things we're most afraid of are the things that can make us strong...if we're brave enough to face them. Jason likes acting, writing, making music, and hanging out with his friends. Sometimes he writes movies. Sometimes he writes songs for movies. Sometimes he stars in those movies and sings those songs. You might know him from The Muppets and Despicable Me. Your parents might know him from other stuff. Nightmares! is his first novel.

Kirsten Miller grew up in a small town just like Cypress Creek, minus the purple mansion. She lives and writes in New York City. Kirsten is the author of the acclaimed Kiki Strike books, the Eternal Ones series, and How to Lead a Life of Crime. You can visit her at kirstenmillerbooks.com.

Halfway through and loving it! My eight year old son couldn't put it down before bed. My five year old daughter was scared though she still wouldn't leave the room because "I want to know what happens next ."

Format: Hardcover
‘Nightmares!‘ written by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller is exciting and a bit scary book for preteen kids nicely illustrated by Karl Kwasny, a first one of three announced in series.

The main character, kid named Charlie Laird is afraid to go to sleep because of the nightmares that trouble him after his mother died and his father remarried. Charlie cannot get over the death of his beloved mother several years ago and certainly not helpful is situation with his stepmother, Charlotte DeChant, for who Charlie is sure she is a witch.

With his father Charlie moved to Charlotte’s house which is really scary place and problem became even bigger when Charlie will get new school principal and nightmares which were happening during nights start occurring during the day as well, blurring the line between reality and delusions…

‘Nightmares!‘ is book that will be great read for older preteen kids who love scary reads, just enough to enjoy it, and not be terrified by fear and have own nightmares. This work also brings good message that fears can be overcome which will be great lesson for kids out there who share Charlie’s fears.

Therefore, literary cooperation of Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller is an exciting and enjoyable experience for children which left enough space to become even better in sequels to come.

Charlie Laird has nitemares- and his daytime life isn't all that great either, what with a rather spooky new stepmother and having to move into her strange house.

But are they just dreams or are his nitemares coming true?

Suitable for any but the youngest kids.

First book in a trilogy. Easy to read and a fun read besides.

Great debut novel by one of my favorite actor/writers. As a school librarian, I am constantly looking for new books to add to our library. So glad to have ordered this for my kids. This book has a little bit of everything for its readers, suspense, humor, and a chapter that brought tears to my eyes as Charlie faces his biggest fear. Can't wait for the sequel and I am sure my kids won't be able to either!
