We children of the 70's remember this CD well. I personally have been looking to replace my 8-track version for years. While not released in the U.S., this Japanese import is currently the only way to buy this album on CD. While the liner notes are in Japanese, the lyrics are also offered in English.

What matters, however, is the music! Hearing these old songs again, "Nights are Forever" and "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" being the hit singles, just filled me with joy. The other songs, "Prisoner", "Showboat Gambler", and all the rest are really superb, mellow pop-rock songs. I was amazed that I still remembered most of the words, and all of the feelings came flooding back.

For those who have been awaiting release on CD - this version is well worth it! (One star reduction for the Japanese liner notes and jewelbox spine text).

for a long time available only as an import, wounded bird records has finally released all 4 of dan seals/john ford coley's
"big tree/atlantic" label efforts. in addition to "nights", you can also get "dowdy ferry road", "some things don't come easy", and "dr. heckle and mr. jive".

the sound on "nights" is crisp and clear.....a very good job on remastering was done by wounded bird. as for the content of this album, these songs sound as good today as they did back in the mid 70's and i find that listening to dan and john's vocals and harmonies nothing short of awe-inspiring. it is amazing just how well these guys' voices sound together. the songs are not complicated in substance but i really am impressed at just how much production and work went into songs like "westward wind" and my favorite "long way home". these songs formed my beginning to a lifetime love of the guitar....but i was most taken aback by just how tight, clear, and pure their harmonies were.

dan seals still has the same sound today....his voice has held up really well(see "make it home"). john ford coley has not been "out there" near as much as dan has. dan has been at it almost non-stop since this first effort(1st major effort anyway) while john has done stints as part of a trio of james griffin(bread), billy swan(i think), and himself. there is a video of him doing an EDJFC song if you search his name on google and follow the leads.

all in all.....a highly recommended effort for fans of melodic soft rock and acoustic music alike. i really wish they would collaborate again....they both made some really great music together!!

After stirring little U.S. chart interest with three albums with A&M this Texas-bred duo discovered the song "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and ignited a run of hits on the Big Tree label. This, their first album for Big Tree, was their best and most commercially successful. The album's title track just missed the pop chart's top slot, but did hit #1 adult contemporary. The song's writer, Parker McGee, also provided the album's title track (and the duo's second hit single). The remaining titles were written by the duo, alone, together and with a few select collaborators. Dan Seals' later reinvention as a country artist is presaged here in the pedal steel and harmonies of "Westward Wind," "Showboat Gambler," and "Lady."

Though soft rock would become a cliché, it was still fresh in 1976, and Seals (the younger brother of Seals & Crofts' Jim Seals) and Coley are energized and inventive with their vocalizing. It's smoothly produced, as you'd expect, but any commercial calculation was the sort previously used in the Brill Building to lace together audience-connecting emotion, easily hummed melodies and hook-filled vocals. And it worked; if you like the hit singles, you'll like how they filled out the album. With earlier CD reissues now out of print, this MP3 collection is a welcome bargain. [©2011 hyperbolium dot com]
