Book Description

A nominated semi finalist in the Kindle Book Review Best Book of 2012 competition.
40 Days 40 Nights: a gripping and memorable British crime thriller set in the run up to London 2012.

There's a new detective in town! Maverick Royal Military Policeman, Sgt Major Tom Crane, is a Special Investigations Branch detective based at Aldershot Garrison, England. Crusty Crane leads his team under the watchful eye of fresh-faced Captain Edwards, a young officer who cannot control his recalcitrant Sgt Major.
Live through 40 days and 40 nights of turmoil as Crane deals with engineered accidents, thefts and murders. Watch as Crane sympathises with the plight of elderly Gurkhas, rails against his Captain's ineffectual command and has to cope with demands on his time and his emotions from his pregnant wife.

A most innovative concept! 40 Days and 40 Nights explodes from the blocks with great pace, intrigue and a plot that leaves the hairs on the back of the neck standing on end - this is no ordinary terror threat, and, worst of all, it could actually happen!
John Paul Davis best selling author, TV and radio commentator.

"Another page turner!" Keith Thomas International Broadcaster InBC Ltd

VIOLATION the third Sgt Major Crane novel is out now!

** Have you read the first Sgt Major Crane novel Steps to Heaven? An internationally acclaimed British crime thriller you won't be able to put down. Why are soldiers killing their families and then committing suicide? Crane is desperate to find the reasons before any more innocent children die.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"40 Days 40 Nights allows the reader into the mind not only of Crane himself, but also of the terrorist leader. This gives the book an extra edge, turning what could have been a gimmick into a powerful piece of writing.
Crane is a charismatic leading man who clearly has the legs to support a whole franchise. This is the second book in the series, and hopefully there will be plenty more. Crane is one of the more interesting new genre protagonists I've encountered in quite a while in this gripping and memorable novel."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel January 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The second novel in the Sgt. Major Crane series is even better than the first novel, Steps to Heaven. Cartmell weaves an intricate story while breathing life into her characters. Reading this novel felt like visiting old friends who live across the sea, friends who speak English in a manner that is understandable but different than the version American's speak. As a reader I care about what happens in their lives.

In addition to a compelling story, the author takes us into the mind of the terrorist who is plotting a very clever attack on a military base. It's obvious the author researched the subject, providing quotes from the Koran and letting us hear the terrorist's voice. The premise of the story is very believable in a world filled with dangerous zealots who believe it's their religious duty to kill infidels.

Sgt. Major Crane must identify the terrorist and stop the attack before it takes place. On top of the stress of his job, Crane worries about his pregnant wife and the eminent birth of his son. Will Crane unravel the clues in time to stop the terrorist and save innocent lives? Will he be there for his wife when the baby is born? I was glad to find out the answers and look forward to reading more novels in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enter the SIB. January 2, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As someone who served in the Royal Military Police for many years I will have to review this book and Cartmells' first in two distinctly separate ways. Firstly, as a good "detective novel", which it is, and I admire her for her research into the Koran, and her spot on portrayal of the local newspaper reporter. If you have never served in the army I know that you would enjoy this, and the first book. BUT, Wendy, the Special Investigation Branch of the British Army is part of the Royal Military Police, not a separate Corps. They both wear the same cap badge. Crane's Officer Commanding would NEVER call him Crane, but always refer to him as 'Sergeant Major', or maybe, in the privacy of the office, as Tom. Likewise, the Royal Military Police General Police Duties Staff Sergeant,Jones, would call Crane "Sir" and he, in turn would be referred to as "Staff" Jones. And the beard Crane has? No I don't think so! I don't wish to nit pick, but I can't help but get frustrated with the obvious, to me anyway, mistakes in Royal Military Police etiquette. But I have to say again, that as a detective story, in the same vein as Detective Inspector Jack Frost,it is a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting forty days and nights October 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I confess I haven't read the first in Ms Cartmell's series, but I found Forty days and nights very easy to get into. The plot of 40/40 was very up do date featuring athletes from the Olympics and Paraplympics, and our hero Sgt Major Crane was in charge of keeping his beady eye on them while they trained at Aldershot Army Camp.

As this pans out into an exciting thriller we have a few other interesting stories hotting up on the side - his wife is expecting their first baby and all is not 100% in that camp including whether Tom stays in the army or goes into 'civvie' street. A handful of Afghani officers are guests of the Coldstream Guards, and Tom Crane is apparently only one of a few that feels a certain uneasiness over this situation...

Wendy Cartmell obviously enjoys doing her homework with meticulous research, and I found this very gratifying. Although I'm not involved with the Army per Se, I have had years of military living and the background story is very well written.

This was an excellent read and I can honestly recommend this. It is different, exciting and I enjoyed every minute spent reading this novel.
