Great Student Films., November 11, 2002
This review is from: Nightshift Collection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It's not really common knowledge, but Stephen King lets student film makers and independent film makers looking for a break make movies based on his short stories for $1. Besides the buck, the only hitch is that you send King a copy of the script before he authorizes the production and once filming is completed you send him a tape of the final product. It seems hard to believe, but it's true. Just ask Frank Darabont. That's how the Academy Award nominated director got his film made, THE WOMAN IN THE ROOM. That was Darabont's student film when he was in film school and the movie he made impressed King so much, it supposedly brought him to tears. It was on the strength of that film that nine years later King gave Darabont the okay to make THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. THE WOMAN IN THE ROOM isn't a supernatural or even scary story. Instead, it is a serious story that deals with euthanasia--mercy killing. The film had no (or a very low) budget, but to be honest, you really can't tell; in many way it looks like an expensive independent picture. The other movie on this tape is THE BOOGEYMAN. This story does deal with the supernatural and I found it intriguing how the filmmakers dealt with the supernatural without any special effects. The movie is kind of frightening, especially for a low budget short and even more so if you watch it alone. Overall, this is a great video for any fan of Darabont, any King fan, or a student/independent filmmaker looking for some inspiration.

Great for King Fans...and that's about it., January 11, 2000
This review is from: Nightshift Collection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ok, this movie scared the daylights out of me as a kid. However, when re-watching it, I realized just how dated this movie is. The first section, The Woman in the Room, is pretty eerie, although extremely simple and short. The directing was really good, however we are talking really low budget here. The second movie was...borderline terrible. The plot and the characters both are undevloped. I felt like I was watching some kid's video production project. The only reason I gave this movie three stars was I felt the directing and the acting in The Woman in the Room was really good. It's no action-packed, fast paced story by any means, but I was emotionally affected. So if you are big into studying film, or just a big Stephen King fan, check this out. But don't go breaking your neck to see it.

Five stars for "The Woman in the Room" alone!, July 14, 2004
This review is from: Nightshift Collection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have not seen The Boogeyman but I saw The Woman In the Room online and I can say it is worth buying just for that! Stephen king himself said that this was a wonderful accomplishment and that it is on his short list of favorite film adaptations. Frank Darabont has directed three Stephen King movies ("Woman", The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile) and all three are marvelous. Both THe Shawshank Redemption won Oscar Nominations for Best Picture and had many other nominations [They should have got them]. The Woman in the Room was one he made as a student director, King selling his rights for a dollar, and this has to be the best of the "dollar babies." Darabont understands King's works and is able to keep the integrity, mood and style of the works. He sees that these stories are rooted in raw, human emotion and makes sure anything he does as a director doesn't mess with that. Even though The Woman in the Room was made with basically no budget, he uses the soft errie music to enhance the characters and story. We see the talent that would eventually make Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Truely, The Woman IN the Room is a diamond in the rough.
