Working The Nightshift Rules, Man...,
By artisticsoul "artisticsoul" (Motown) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nightshift (Audio CD)
From the beginning to the end, "Nightshift" is a stunning album. You have the melodious radio hit, "Chasing The Wind" followed by a melodious title track, "Nightshift", and 9 other goodies after that. Gregg Karukas has an uncanny ear for melody, and that's something that you rarely hear in most smooth jazz songs nowadays. When I listen to the radio and I hear a song that doesn't grab me from the jump, I'm like "yeah, yeah... hurry up and end already." But when I heard "Chasing The Wind", I had to scoop up the album. And I'm glad I did because you can listen to the whole cd without skipping one song. It's funny, because there's a vocal selection (I hate vocal jazz songs) called "Time Could Pass" with Jonathan Butler, and I thought I would hate it... but it's my 3rd favorite song on the cd. That's because you can't get the melody out of your head. A lot of people may be on a whole other level than myself, so they would probably skip the song. But if you take the time to listen to it, you'll realize how intricate it is... the vocals, the music, the lyrics- everything. The same thing about Gregg's tribute to Stevie Wonder ("Stevie"). You'll think that it doesn't sound like a Stevie Wonder song upon first listen, but then you'll realize that it's very Stevie-esque. It's a trancy song. And I love the bridge on "My Favorite Season." So in a nutshell, if you don't get this album, you're off your rocker because this is one of those rare smooth jazz albums where you could listen to the whole thing straight through. The tunes are hard to get out of your head. Great job, Gregg!

Excellent!,

This CD was recommened to me by Amazon. They hit the nail right on the head! It's just what I look for in a CD! This is a great CD for sitting by the fire, reading a good book, or working around the house. I prefer strictly instrumental CDs, and this one has only one vocal track which makes it nearly perfect. I would highly recommend this to anyone, and I plan to purchase more of this artist's works.

The first time I heard this selection, was 5:30 a.m. on The Oasis 107.5 Smooth Jazz Radio. I was on my way to work which is 70 plus miles from where I live. It was so smooth I woke right up and ask myself "self, who is that by!!!?". It's so smooth I can drive all day and not even get tired. The CD is about worn out because it is my favorite. I suggest that this be a #1 hit everywhere. Thanks "MR. K" for your inspiration.

Great Return, Glad you're back!,

I first bought Blue Touch last year after hearing a cut on the radio(106.1 Phila.). I'm a former National Coordinator for Jazz Music @ Arista and handled all the early GRP product.Greg's work is just beautiful in harmonics and melodies. Other keyboard artists that I enjoy are Bob James, Dave Grusin and Brian Culberston.Out of all these artists, Gregg's music is my favorite. His style just kisses the keys and expresses love personified. In a harsh world, his music is a huge refuge. I would like more lyrics similiar to Road Back to Love. That song from Blue Touch is almost spiritual in its message. All of Gregg's music is sensitive and uplifting.Keep up the work Gregg, and I'll keep encouraging everyone I know to buy it.

Nearly perfect,

This is a nearly perfect little gem I consider to be the best investment I ever made. I picked this up a couple years ago from a $1 "cut-out" bin and it turned out to be one of my survival tools for Houston traffic. This cd has an immediate relaxing effect on me no matter how bad my commute to work is. Even the lone vocal number sung by Jonathan Butler doesn't seem out place in the middle of this otherwise all-instrumental collection. The title track is a staple on the local smooth jazz station 95.7 "the wave". I have to wonder why Gregg hasn't released anything since this one. Must be hard to top "near perfection". Highly recommended for smooth jazz fans.-mw

enjoying the nightshift!,

i'm enjoying the nightshift thanks to another breezy release from the master of smooth jazz gregg karukas. it's a worthy follow-up to his mellow blue touch cd with a more up-beat style showcasing some horns, harmonica and a little touch of brazilian latin rhythms. the interplay of gregg's heartfelt keyboard style with some catchy sax and guitar solos make for a magic mix of smooth jazz to while away those long hours on the night shift!

I always listen to channel 28 on satelite audio and this is where I was fortunate to be exposed to Gregg's music. What more can one say .... SUPERB! Other artist that ranks with Gregg is the likes of Jeff Lorber, Rick Braun which I thing is very under rated at this time, Chris Boti and need I continue....
More please!!!!!!!

A cult album among connoisseurs!,

What else may it be said about the interpretative eloquence of this master of the smooth jazz? Karukas plays with accurate innovativeness plenty of inspiration and mercurial creativeness. His sound has become a cult motive of gladness by an immense legion of hard fans of the modern sound of jazz.
His fame as keyboardist has achieved a personal place and today is an obligated reference at the moment to think about in the great masters of this moving genre.
