brilliant roleplaying opportunities, September 1, 2002
This review is from: Nightwatch: In the Living City (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons/Forgotten Realms/Raven's Bluff Module LC3) (Paperback)
Just got hold of this in pdf format. It's an excellent introductory-level adventure for levels 1-3. The scenario is that the PC's are roped in to work as probationary nightwatch in Raven's Bluff. They have to keep the peace for the night and make sure no-one is killed and no crimes are committed. Full of brilliant role-playing opportunities, this is definitely one for the thinking group.
The game is split up into a number of keyed scenarios that can link up to others later on. There are some hilarious NPCs to meet including an old vampire-slayer, a deranged druid who lives in the sewer with rats and a crazed fisherman trying to dice up his neighbour into burley.
There are not a lot of opportunities to hack & slash on the PC's part but it is a really nice alternative to most of the introductory modules out there. Look for it on the net or pick up an old hardcopy somewhere. Highly recommended.

The beginning of Living campaigns, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Nightwatch: In the Living City (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons/Forgotten Realms/Raven's Bluff Module LC3) (Paperback)
I will admit from the beginning that I am slightly biased in my review because I personally know the two authors. Take that as you will.
This module was the first to address and conceptualize the "Living City" concept. This is the springboard to start characters as part of the guard of Raven's Bluff. Assignments and duties develop your characters into heroic characters and open up numerous opportunities for continuing your character beyond the confines of this adventure.
This concept was picked up by the RPGA (Role-Players Gaming Association-now pretty much defunct) and over the last 10-15 years Living campaigns have ruled the gaming convention world.
Having gamed with Walt and Kira several times, the emphasis was always on fun roleplaying but the adventures encounters and goal were never lost in the dramatics. This adventure directly reflects this type of approach and has a little bit of everything for all types of gamers.
If you can get hold of this module you will be garnering a piece of roleplaying history. The fact that it is a fun adventure is a huge bonus.
