This is an excellent book! If you are a beginner and just starting out like I am, this is the book for you. The topics are excellent. They are written in easy to read and understand words and terms. This book covers all the topics including what to look for in your first telescope. The charts are wonderful and easy to read. The pictures are awesome. In addition, Terence provides a list of stars and constellations along with their pronunciation and meaning. Terence shows and explains how to use major constellations to find other constellations and stars. I found that I couldn't put the book down. This book will hook you on backyard astronomy.

This is the first book I've read explaining the universe that keeps it simple enough for a beginner to understand. I checked the book out at the public library and can not wait to get my own copy and a highlighter. Fantastic!

Published and updated for the year 2000,this book is nevertheless another "stellar" contribution by author Terrence Dickinson.Spiral-bound,it is easily transported and accessed while out "seeing." Well-presented, and down-to-earth(pardon the reverse pun) for those of us who are newbies to this most wonderful adventure of amateur astronomy.Dark skies!

Excellent book, but you should buy the Third Edition.,

While echoing the positive comments of all other reviewers, the reader should be cautioned that the new Third Edition (1998) has been released. The planetary tables in the back of the "New Edition" (1989) only go through the year 2000; those in the "Third Edition" are good through 2010. Make sure that you are ordering the Third Edition!

Terence Dickinson's NIGHT WATCH is a truely remarkable book that allows everyone young and old to embark on a voyage amongst the stars. The books simplicity may seem simple, but the opposite is true, Terence has inspired your mind, titilated it and filled it with all the information it needs! In other words the reader learns quickly and before he or she knows it, is racing from one constellation to the next, viewing the Orion's Nebula or the Dumbell Nebula, zipping off to the open cluster in Hercules, and where's the book? On the table within easy reach of course. When I met Terence in Vancouver B.C. one year during a lecture on Mars (when Mars was at its closest)..even his lecture was indepth, but it held you spell bound, wanting more. Terence is a truly remarkable author, lecturer, and Astronomer, who is dedicated to bring the Universe from such a lofty height, right down to earth for all to understand. YOUR GONNA LOVE THIS BOOK..! Clear Skys all...the LEONIDS are coming! 3000 - 10,000 Meteor's per hour! Where are they going to come from? The constellation Leo! Where's that? Get Terence Dickinson's book, he'll show you right where it is!!!<FRASER VALLEY ASTRONOMERS SOCIETY>

A standard guide book for amateur astronomers.,

This review is from: Nightwatch: An Equinox Guide to Viewing the Universe (Spiral-bound)
Terence Dickinson recently won the Order of Canada for his work in educating the public about Astronomy. Nightwatch is the ipso facto standard used by members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and is to be highly recommended for both beginner and veteran. The spiral binding makes the star maps convenient to use. They are designed to be easily read under dark skies using a red pen flashlight. Included are introductory articles on Astonomy, telescopes and binoculars, as well as an index of major astronomical events (ie. eclipses).

This is a terrific book for beginning the hobby of astronomy. It contains many easy to read sky charts and gives great information on what to look for when searching for a telescope. There is also a fine section on the planets and deep space Messier objects. A must for all beginners.
