Book Description

October 2001

On an isolated highway in the Crimea, as the President of the United States races toward a top secret nuclear summit, high-powered weaponry suddenly opens fire on the motorcade, brutally slaying America's Chief Executive and those assigned to protect him.

Above a rushing whitewater river in the Missouri Ozarks, a jet-black Huey helicopter appears from nowhere to rain death upon the traveling party of the U.S. Vice President.  Only the quick, decisive actions of Special Agent Vince Kellogg of the Secret Service saves the V.P. from sharing the grim fate of the Commander-in-Chief.

Without warning, the greatest nation on Earth been rendered leaderless.  Liberty and democracy have been places under siege by a well-armed and organized foe -- an enemy operating not from outside America's borders, but from within her own sacrosanct halls of power.  And now a small handful of patriots must do whatever it takes to prevent America's legacy of freedom from becoming a thing of the past -- and stem the tide of treason, nuclear terror, and death originating from the remarkable airborne sentinel called...

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Although not as well-known as the Clancys, Cusslers, and Coontzes of the bestseller lists, Richard P. Henrick has written 17 riveting military technothrillers--including Crimson Tide and Flight of the Condor. The common theme in his books is how ordinary people respond to exceptional pressure under what-if circumstances.

The premise behind Henrick's 18th book--one of his best in terms of timeliness and sheer nervous energy--is what would happen if somebody wanted the reigns of power in America badly enough to kill anyone who stood in the way.

En route to a top-secret meeting in the Crimea, the president's convoy is attacked and he is killed. At the same moment, a black helicopter blasts the Missouri town where the vice president is fishing. Only the actions of secret service special agent Vince Kellogg keep him alive--at least for the moment. Meanwhile, up in the stratosphere, a specially modified 747 called Nightwatch becomes the new seat of power for the beleaguered American government. Navy commander Brittany Edwards is one of five officers on board with the authority to launch a nuclear attack--but who, exactly, is the government fighting?

Henrick's characters are interesting and varied, and even the villains have enough depth to make readers understand--if not sympathize--with them. But it's the giant flying fortress itself that is his best creation: he gives it so much personality that we share the pain when a missile explodes nearby and almost destroys the Nightwatch. --Dick Adler --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

A good story lurks somewhere beneath the machismo posturing, wooden dialogue, confused plotting and acronym-heavy prose of Henrick's (Crimson Tide; Attack on the Queen) new military thriller. All that clutter gets in the way of a wild adventure that otherwise would have the firepower of a bazooka. For starters, the president of the U.S. is assassinated while on a diplomatic mission to the Crimea. Soon after, a mysterious group of thugs kidnaps the vice-president during a river rafting trip in Missouri. Then, an ICBM leaves Russian soil, heading for the West. It soon becomes apparent that an overthrow of the U.S. government is underway. The leaders of the coup carry out their plot from aboard Nightwatch, a high-tech 747 that follows the president wherever he goes, ensuring communication with the nation's capital. The militants, led by Admiral Trent Warner, stay in contact with their cohorts aboard a nuclear sub off the coast of the eastern seaboard and in the rough terrain of the Missouri Ozarks, where the vice-president and his bodyguard have been taken hostage, first by a family of local hicks, then by the forces plotting the government overthrow. The coup leaders' main gripe is that old saw: The government has gone soft politically and panders to too many special interests. A large cast of disposable and unmemorable characters move in and out of the story. They are led, nominally, by two brothers, Vince Kellogg, who guards the vice-president, and Thomas Kellogg, who leads the search party for the v-p. The dialogue throughout is tough and labored, and the military jargon often becomes overwhelming. An 80-item glossary of abbreviation emphasizes that this book will best appeal to those obsessed with the fighting forces. Film rights optioned to Jerry Bruckheimer, coproducer of Crimson Tide. 5.0 out of 5 stars Where have you been all these years?, August 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightwatch (Hardcover)
Took Dick Adler's suggestion and just finished NIGHTWATCH. It was a marvelous read--filled w/ edge of your seat action and interesting characters. It's obvious Henrick's done his homework, and I sense that much of the work was written on location w/ the military. Now the question remains, where has Mr. Henrick's work been hiding these years. From the book's bio, he's obviously been busy, yet other than seeing CRIMSON TIDE, this is the first I've heard of him. I noted from the list of acknowledgements in the back of the book that he's obviously a Wm. Morris client, w/ Rob't Gottleib representing. Mr. Henrick, NIGHTWATCH is a superb book and should have gotten extensive distribution. As a publishing veteran, I question both your agent's and publishers support level. Obviously they didn't believe in this wonderful story, that should have surely made it into the Times best seller list. We desperately need books of this caliber to keep our business growing, and don't be afraid to seek new representation for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST READ OF 1999!, December 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightwatch (Hardcover)
Was more than surprised to get this book as a gift and then to find how very excellent it turned out to be. Henrick got me hooked from the first sentence, pulling me right into the action. There's never a dull moment, and it's remarkable how Henrick puts together all the fascinating plot lines into a final climax that sent shivers up my spine long into the night! I'm certain that the movie version will be right up there w/ Henrick's CRIMSON TIDE, and I can't wait for the next Kellogg book to be released. So by all means, read this novel--you won't be disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Richard, stick with submarines, June 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightwatch (Hardcover)
Having read many of Henrick's now-trite submarine stories, I figured I would give this book a shot (mostly because I got it for free at the library). All I can say is that this book is painful to read, mainly because of poor dialogue. Would anyone really say "I read that same article, and was impressed by the way all that firepower is delivered on target"? Characters speak mechanically, and conversations read like a reasearch paper. The dialogue is a thinly-veiled attempt at explaining military terms and equipment and really distracts from what might be an interesting story, if written by a more capable author. Maybe Henrick can find a writer to work with so he can concentrate on storyline. P.S. Richard - the "mad-general plots to assume power" plot has been beaten to death - try something FRESH.
