A interesting read...a little racy and PG-13, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Nightwing: The Lost Year (Paperback)
I enjoyed this look into the "Lost Year"...I loved how it delved more into Dick Grayson's relationship with Barbra Gordon who I love, and his frustration with Bruce and how their relationship at that time, like most adults and their teenaged children, always hits a rough patch where the teenager thinks he/she is adult and knows everything and the adult is wrong about pretty much everything, but also how the adult can be insensitive to the struggles and complexities in the life of a young man/woman on the verge of adulthood.
I though it was well written and fast paced.
It made Dick Grayson more real and accessible, he is my second favorite hero next to Batman,, his flaws and missteps are very similar to those of most young men who arent' secret vigilantes, he can be an absolute pig and insensitive, selfish jerk to a former girlfriend, but he can also make some pretty good decisions showing he took to heart the principles and integrity he was raised with.
However, I found it to have a lot of sexuality, not good for younger readers, which is typical for Nightwing stories, the writers tend to give him a pretty healthy sex life, he seems to have more time for that, (or interest in it) than Bruce, who, I think, despite Bruce's tough guy, hard as nails, demeanor, he is still a cultured, aristocrat, and a mature man, who, and in the last few years is a little more selective about who he sleeps with.
Dick, after all, is still a hot young man with an active libido. So I get it.
I think its worth a peek.

Short but Sweet, December 21, 2008
This review is from: Nightwing: The Lost Year (Paperback)
*Spoilers* I was a bit skeptical at first, as I had read some negative reviews about it, but The Lost Year quickly became one of my favorite Nightwing TPBs. The new Vigilante stands for everything that Nightwing thrives not to be, and accompanied by the look into Grayson's past, it makes for a very good read. My only regret is that it was cut short (thanks to The Ressurection of Ras Al Ghul), but hopefully with the Vigilante series starting later this month, will eventually get more of what happened. Still, the cliffhanger it ends on was satisfying enough for me, and I'd definately recommend it.

A Great Story about Dick Grayson!, July 17, 2011
This review is from: Nightwing: The Lost Year (Paperback)
I've never read a comic about Dick Grayson before. I knew he was the original Robin and that he later went on to become Nightwing, but I didn't know that character had such an interesting backstory to him and such in depth motivations behind him.
The story concentrates on Dick's coming of age and moving out from under Batman's shadow, which is something I think everyone can relate to. We all have someone's expectations that we try to live up to, or someone we are compared to. Be it a sibling, a parent, a friend, a mentor, a co-worker we're all compared to someone else and at one point we all want to stop being compared to them and stand on our own two feet. However most of us aren't superheroes ;-)
Dick is used by a group of young people to try to break into Wayne Industries and steal technology and money. Dick stops them and they get busted. However Dick later goes on to forgive that group of people and have dinner with them when they are out of jail and he forgives them, but never fully trusts them.
They again try to use Dick to get what they want, but Dick again manages to outwit them and stop them dead in their tracks and bring them to justice. Batman is only seen mostly in flashbacks and once in present day, but he is used only to advance the plot and he doesn't over-shadow Nightwing.
It was a good story and the artwork is good too. You should definitely check it out!
