Great reading!,
By Christopher Griffen "Commitment to mediocrity!" (Pleasanton, CA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
When Batman instructs his former protege, Nightwing (a.k.a., Dick Grayson, the first Robin), to go to the city of Bludhaven to help solve a murder mystery, he eagerly accepts. But what he expects to be a "weekend outing" soon becomes a life mission.Nightwing takes to Bludhaven, a city with no spandex-clad, super heroes of its own, and quickly discovers that he likes having his own turf to patrol. "A Knight in Bludhaven" is the first story arc of the NIGHTWING regular series, featuring the story of Nightwing's adoption of the dismal, blighted city of Bludhaven and the discovery of the nasty villain who holds sway over the city. It's very much a coming-of-age story for a character who has existed for sixty years now. Dick Grayson isn't Robin anymore. He's his own man and he has his own unique way of dispensing justice. The best chapter of the story is the one which features Tim Drake, the current Robin, as a guest star. Robin contrasts Nightwing and Batman and shows just how much the two men are cut from the same cloth. Great reading and a non-stop thrill ride. The action scenes read like a Hong Kong action flick thanks to the wild, dynamic art of Scott McDaniel. Writer Chuck Dixon is top-notch at plotting and characterization. Don't miss out! This is one great book!

The Start of a Beautiful Friendship......,
By Savant11 "Savant11" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
Needing an aesthetic fix I picked this book up one day simply for the art and after reading I was not disapointed either by the writing. Chuck Dixon is a great writer and along with Scot McDaniels pencils it makes this book a must have.Nightwing is a spin off character from the Batman franchise. He's the first Robin, Dick Grayson, all grown up now and his own man. He goes to a Bludhaven an industrial city sent by his mentor/Father Batman to solve a crime. In the process Nightwing decides to stay in Bludhaven because he can make a difference as well as get away from under the shadow of Batman. I like Nightwing a lot. He's likable, smart, kind, confident and sexy.the type of guy every girl dreams of having for a boyfriend (or husband). Nightwing is constantly being hit on by women in his books and not without reason. For male comic book readers he has more of a realistic kind of masculinity, none of the overbearing machismo, which is what makes him so popular with male readers. Nightwing is supposed to be his own character in his own right. But frankly I think that he's DC's answer to Spiderman. I find the two characters very similar except for the fact that Nightwing has no superpowers and he's a bit more confident than Spider-man in his real life. Unlike Batman (or Spider-man) Nightwing does not do what he does because he feels it's his responsibility to make the world right. He does what he does because its the right thing to do. Anyway this is a very good book one of the better books in DC's arsenal because it has a lot of action and the character, unlike Batman really does have a life when he's not in costume. I love the character so much that even though I have the four TPB I also collected the entire run in single print. Its that good. I would also recomend the second TPB Rough Justice as the art work is a bit more sexy and hard edged. TPB 3& 4 Love and Bullets and a Darker Shade of Justice are a bit more cartoony. But the writing is good all around

Great Batman Story with Less Angst and Less Baggage,
By
This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
Chuck Dixon is King of the Action Hero and Nightwing is the perfect foil for him to tell Die Hard type stories on the comic page. Combined with a great art team that exudes flying bullets, acrobatic moves and Hong Kong style scenes, this TPB is a fun read. My only criticisms are that the conclusion was a little bit of a letdown and that some of artwork took a couple of looks to understand. Other then that if you are looking for a Batman comic with less brooding and more fun, give this a try.

How I became a Nightwing fan,

This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
I've always enjoyed reading Batman comics and graphic novels, so I figured, why not try a Nightwing graphic novel? Anymore the way the comic world operates you have to subscribe to Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl just to know what is going on with Batman anyway.
Nightwing has a different personality from his mentor. Dixon does a good job establishing that he has a sense of humor. For example, a thug cuts Nightwing's ponytail: "I was getting sick of it anyway." Batman would just punch the guy harder than the other thugs. Nightwing is no longer under the shadow of his mentor. "A Knight in Bludhaven" describes the transition for Dick Grayson as he becomes a crime fighter in a city that is even more corrupt than Gotham: Bludhaven. There are no Alfreds, Jim Gordons, or Barbara Gordons in this urban cesspool. Nightwing becomes the protector of Bludhaven as Batman is the protector of Gotham. Nightwing has finally come of age to call his own shots. He is a different character with a different set of enemies. In fact, the secret Bludhaven crime boss is a resurrected baddie from Dick's past. This is a great coming-of-age story that shows that Grayson is ready for the big-time. If this is what Nightwing is like, I'll probably get a few more of his storylines. Good stuff.

Warning: you WILL get hooked on Chuck Dixon,
By Windbreaker (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
This trade collects the first 8 issues of Nightwing. In a word - Outstanding! This is definitely not just for NW fans, but Bat-family fans wil especially love it. Dixon's story is a perfect balance between action and mystery. For the most part, I love the art. But it is occassionally too busy. McDaniel's action scenes have so much going on, that it's sometimes difficult to keep track of exactly what's happening.
Batman sends NW to Bludhaven to solve a mystery involving 21 dead criminals. Before long he's in over his head finding a place to settle, his day job, crooked cops, and his caped crusades. Robin drops in at one point, and the two have a revealing conversation about what makes Bruce, Dick, and Tim all tick.

One of the best spin-off sagas in the Batman mythos!!!,
By "zsinj16" (Ill, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
This is the best spin-off saga in the Batman mythos that I have read, in my honest opinion! It's about Dick Grayson, who was once the Dark Knight's vigilante sidekick, Robin. But, because of their differences and internal conflicts with one another, Batman and Robin went their separate ways, and Dick Grayson went from the vigilante sidekick, Robin, and assumed the identity of a new vigilante just about as rough and as vicious as Batman himself, Nightwing! In this first volme of the "Nightwing Series", Batman orders Nightwing to investigate the brutal and grotesque murder of over twenty gangsters belonging to a Chinese Mafia. Nightwing is charged with finding out who is the culprit of this hideous and insidious crime, and has to go deep into the city of Bludhaven's underworld to find out. No Batman fan should miss this great spinoff in the Batman mythos that is filled with action, intrigue, and dark mystery. I myself can't wait to buy the next volumes in the Nightwing series!!

A great beginning to an awesome series!,
This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
This series contains DC comic's greatest hero, Nightwing, and is written by DC comic's greatest writer, Chuck Dixon! He's written all 40+ issues so far and the consistency and quality is in each and every one. It's also drawn by one of the most dynamic artists around, Scott McDaniel. His perspective work will make you believe Nightwing is the greatest acrobat ever. The story entails Dick Grayson/Nightwing moving out from under Batman's wing, down the coast to crumbling, crime-ridden Bludhaven. It makes Gotham look nice. With crooked cops and crime wars all around, can Nightwing figure out who's behind the murders he's investigating?

Nightwing rocks!,

This review is from: Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven (Paperback)
Nightwing gets how own book and town (Bludhaven) and its fun. Dick Grayson is almost completely out of Batman's shadow and writer Chuck Dixon really lets him develop as a character. The setting, villains, supporting characters, etc., are all new to Nightwing and its great meeting these through his eyes. Scott McDaniel's art is good but a little frenetic at times. Overall a good fun book.

My brother told me about Nightwing and the new ongoing series about a decade ago. But at that time I was still very much into my 'read only the kick butt female super heroines' phase of comic collecting. All these years later, I've finally started to branch out and read the works of Superman and Batman, the adventures of the present, as well as the past. And while Wonder Woman will always remain my favorite character, I've discovered the many MANY wonderful stories out there. While reading Batman, you can't help but come across a reference or story line with Nightwing in it, and that triggered my memory of my brother saying just how awesome this series was. Much to my chagrin, even these graphic novels are now harder to find. But I was able to find a new copy of Volume 1, thanks to Amazon's Marketplace, and I'm so glad I did.
Nightwing is the former Robin, Dick Grayson. He's all grown up and had started to chafe under Batman's alpha male guardianship of Gotham. And it would take a side job which Nightwing was assigned by Batman, to lead him to the corrupted city of Bludhaven, a sister city of Gotham. The mystery becomes hip deep and rising in a matter of pages, as 21 top mobsters wash up in Gotham. Nightwing sets out to solve the mystery, only to discover that the town of Bludhaven is in desperate need of her own costumed champion. Bludhaven is so mired down in corruption that it is literally like a cancer killing the city. And Nightwing turns out to be just the medicine the doctor ordered. I can't mention the main villain without spoiling the mystery, but suffice to say it wasn't even close to any of the suspects I had in mind. The art is fresh and dynamic, even more than 10 years later. And as many of us already know, Chuck Dixon has continued to be a master in the field. And his writing on this series is just as good. This book offers a great adventure, plenty of action, fantastic plot and story line, amazing art, and a great cast of side characters and special guest stars. My favorite of the individual issues actually features the new Robin, Tim Drake. I especially love the way the art will often overlap within a single frame to show the action in motion as Nightwing performs his acrobatic feats. A single frame will contain all the different phases of his flips and motion, so you can actually visually SEE the amazing flips and moves that he's performing. It's such a great idea, and REALLY works. Bottom line is, if you like Batman, or Dick Grayson and his Robin character, or even just really great comic story telling and art, then you do not want to miss out on this book. I can assure you, the current price of the graphic novel, whether used or new, is WELL worth it. You get what you pay for. I was delighted to be able to find a new copy to add to my collection. Suffice to say I'm hooked enough to want volume 2, which is CONSIDERABLY more expensive. (Nightwing Vol. 2: Rough Justice) Really, is there any better compliment? LOL Give this a try, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Thanks for your time folks. Sincerely, R.A. McDowell
