For all those who ask, "How can I take black & white photos with my camera?" This is the software tool for you. Don't shoot B/W in camera. Shoot color. It will give you more flexibility in the future. Then use Silver Efex to convert your images to black & white (or, toned duotones). Silver Efex Pro 2 provides even more granularity of control in editing than Silver Efex 1 (especially wrt Brightness, Contrast and Sharpness controls - but also by adding some edge and vignette treatments). It still has the wonderful breadth of film emulating effects and the ability to control the level of grain for those film styles (which span from low to high ISO). It still incorporates the Control Point technology which I love for making adjustments in specific points on an image - certainly more control than you'd get dodging & burning in a darkroom (and with far less processing & trial and error time).

Per the other reviewer's mature rant... I asked Nik's Cust. Svc. Dept. whether I could run Silver Efex Pro 2 in parallel with my Silver Efex Pro 1. Their (responsive) reply was that yes, it certainly could be done but that they highly recommended only running one version of SEP at a time. I haven't researched exporting custom saved presets from one version to another, but since it's possible to download additional presets from Nik's website I would suspect that one could port their own custom presets to another version too. I'll have to test the ones I created in SEP v. 1.

This is a highly rated program in all the well-regarded photo magazines and in the very reputable pro camera stores I shop at and seminars I attend. Thumbs up to Silver Efex.

I was impressed with the demo version of Silver Efex Pro that I tried out a couple years ago and heard so many great things about this update that I really wanted to use it for my Lightroom processing. The only thing that held me back was the price tag. I couldn't justify spending nearly $200 for the software and figured I would make do with the B&W adjustments in Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. I found the student version on Amazon for less than half the price and since I'm enrolled at the New York Institute of Photography I figured that would work as a valid qualification to get the academic version. It did and I'm very pleased with the output I get from this plugin. I really enjoy processing a lot of my photos as B&W and this is the top of the line method to do so. I would have given it 5 stars but I stll think the price is a bit steep even at the discount I received. Topaz Labs has come out with a similar product but it'sn not nearly as powerful but is a lot more reaonably priced. I think I paid around $30 for their plugin.

Excellent product. The best of all B&W conversions for photography. Easy to install in CS5. Instructions very easy to follow. Simple and professional.

First of all, several have complained about the install process being an academic purchase. My wife is a teacher and works part time for our company as a fine photographer as well. I found it to be seamless and followed the instructions. No problems whatsoever and I followed the online instructions to obtain the product key late in the evening and had it in my inbox the very next morning. Install was simple and smooth.

The product is great and I would rate myself an advanced PS user. Our company provides a lot of black and white images and prints for corporations, Churches, CD/DVD layout, artists, as well as full portrait, promo, event photography. This is far more than a shortcut or "action", but actually software that works and works well having grown up in my formative years in college and later to own our current company shooting film with a full darkroom. The tools are intuitive by nature and simulate many of wonderful aspects of B&W film work even with the factory presets. However, after reading the manual and going through some of the vid tutorials, manual editing is wonderful. Great product and highly recommended. Even works well with graphic work. Not a lot of money to spend to "de-sterilize" a purely out of the cam digital image.

I've bought plenty of products from Amazon, but haven't felt compelled enough to write a review. Finally I've met one.

I received the academic version of Silver Efex for Christmas and am now on my second day of fruitlessly trying to activate it. Nik Software uses a third party company called Identit-E to handle their verification. This company (whose primary business stems from the web) has one of the most miserable websites I've ever encountered. I've tried using Safari, Chrome, and Firefox to access the site to no avail. First it literally takes five minutes to load. I put my information in, and after another arduous wait, the server stops responding. I reload, try again, make it to another page, and once again the server stops responding. Now I can't load the first page no matter how hard I try.

I'm done. I'm returning this to Amazon then promptly pirating it. DRM like this ruins the software industry.
