Book Description

July 1, 1995 3718655829 978-3718655823
This volume contains the text of both "The Suicide" and Erdman's first major albeit less known work, "The Warrant". Although both plays were written in the early 1920s, they were haunted by the political spectre of totalitarianism and it was only in the 1980s that they began to be staged regularly worldwide. The plays themselves, full of political satire and paradox, show the skill of this playwright. In addition, the historical context of the plays and Erdman's use of language are discussed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Nikolai Erdman is best known in the West for his second full-length play, BThe Suicide/B, called `a work of genius' by Konstantin Stanislavsky and `empty and even harmful' by the self-proclaimed dilettante in theatrical matters, Joseph Stalin. As is well known now, it was the latter opinion which dictated that BThe Suicide/B, written in the late 1920s, would gather dust in archives and personal libraries for 40 years before it could be performed.
