We don't know much about this, as we replaced this one for our son that had dropped it. You may want to inquire at Wolf Camera or a good independent camera store. Our son has several lenses, but we aren't sure which one he uses for what. Good luck!
It depends on your budget and what kind of shots you want, the 55/300 is a great Zoom lens for those close in shots but the 18/55 will give you more range for everyday shooting, family, street...etc etc. It's really up to you, if your budget is stretched then stick with the 55/300 for now and see how you get on with it, you can always get the 18/55 at a later date.
According to Ken Rockwell's great site (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-55mm-vr.htm): "This is a DX lens, which means it works perfectly on every DX digital camera from the D40 through the D300 and from the D100 and D1 through the D3."
