5.0 out of 5 stars great lens, great price!
just got a Nikon D70 and needed a couple of lens' for different uses. This lens provides for a great mid-range lens and works like a charm. highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not auto focus with D40
I bought this lense because of the price. It is refurbished by Nikon and it is a good lense. It will not autofocus with the Nikon D40, but still takes good pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, lightweight, optically excellent lens for DSLR use, October 20, 2011

From the reading I've done, Nikon made over a million of these lenses, to be sold with amateur grade 35mm film cameras, at a time when digital was taking off.

With those same film cameras sitting, unsold, next to the "new" digital counterparts, this left the market flooded with these lenses. They're available very inexpensively on the used market.

They are lightweight and optically EXCELLENT. I use one on a professional Nikon DSLR, the D700, as well as on a D70s and D7000.

If you want a sharp, low distortion very inexpensive lens for your DSLR, consider one of these. The upshot to the low cost is that even a student can afford one of these and at f/3.3 at the wide end, they're actually reasonably bright. (at 80mm, you're stuck with f/5.6, typical of a consumer-grade lens)
