Product Description

From the Manufacturer

It's small, light and fits snugly in your hands. It's a 35mm single lens reflex camera with interchangeable lens capability--and best of all it's a Nikon. It's compact and lightweight design includes fully automatic focus and exposure controls, built-in flash and automatic film advance. Because it's a Nikon, the N55 will give you more possibilities for control and creativity. This camera was designed with one thing in mind--to show you how easy and exciting it can be to create beautiful images.

Compact, Lightweight Entry into the Nikon Total Imaging System
You don't need to be a pro to get a handle on this Nikon 35mm SLR. It's so compact and lightweight (12.3 oz.) that anyone can handle it. Features include an ergonomic grip with camera controls that fall naturally under your fingers. The camera is built tough with a durable metal lens mount for optical integrity...and offers you the opportunity to mount interchangeable Nikkor lenses and grow with a camera system that offers virtually limitless possibilities.

Advanced Program Mode Dial for Creative Options
Set the Mode Dial at "green-for-go" Auto and the N55 automatically sets the exposure, shutter speed and aperture controls. You can get more creative automatically, too, with the camera's five Vari-Program scene modes. Each mode optimizes the camera's settings for the most popular types of photography, leaving the photographer free to concentrate on the subject. They include Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports Continuous and Night Scene.

3-Area Dynamic AF System
To help you capture natural movement, Nikon designed the N55 with its Dynamic AF system with three focus areas that cover a wide picture-taking field to help insure sharp pictures, even when the subject is not in the center of the frame. Dynamic AF Technology uses all three sensors to maintain focus on subjects that move within the AF sensor area. The N55 selects corresponding AF sensors and maintains focus at 1.5 frames per second. Pre-wind film loading ensures the film is already back in the cassette at the end of the roll.

3D Matrix Metering
This exclusive Nikon metering system measures the entire image, analyzing details of light and contrast. Referring to an internal database of over 30,000 scenes from an enormous range of shooting conditions, the system analyzes the scene to make the ideal exposure, revealing the beauty and subtlety of color an light that made you stop and take a shot. When set to Auto mode, the N55 makes getting Nikon-quality SLR pictures simple. Look through the finder and press the shutter release. The N55 handles the rest.

Auto Pop-up Flash
The N55's automatic, built-in pop-up Speedlight flash is another feature that helps make it a snap to take the world's greatest pictures. And it offers more ways to get creative, too. In the Auto and five Vari-Program modes, the flash pops up when needed, firing automatically when light is low or the subject is backlit. A Red-Eye Reduction light is precision timed to contract the subject's pupils right before shutter release, minimizing red-eye from the picture. Slow-sync mode allows you to creatively use flash while allowing background elements and colors to fill in the frame.

Top Panel LCD Display
An easy-to-see top panel LCD shows you camera setting information at a glance, including f/stop, shutter speed, flash mode and more.

Full-Information, Adjustable Viewfinder
Most of the data on the LCD panel also appears in the viewfinder LCD, for setting adjustments without taking your eye from the viewfinder. To accommodate near- or far-sighted photographers, the N55 has a built-in diopter adjustment with settings from -1.5 to +0.8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Camera, June 24, 2004
By David L. Ludwig (Violet, LA United States) - See all my reviews
I've owned 2 previous SLR's, an Olympus and a Canon Rebel. Both of these cameras produced great photos. The Nikon N55 has surpassed every expectation. An instruction book is finally written in plain english. I did a lot of research and believe me the N55 is worth more than its retail price. The photos produced in the auto modes are exceptional. I was willing to invest as much as $500 in an SLR, but after researching I found that no camera was worth the additional money. The cost-benefit of the N55 is tremendous. I can't express how happy I am with this camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's awesome and it's a Nikon!, November 4, 2003
By NHgboy (Newport, NH United States) - See all my reviews
I have owned two other 35mm SLR cameras. The first was a Nikon FM (fully manual camera) and the second was a Cannon Rebel E (similar to the Nikon N55, in terms of features). I loved the Nikon FM camera and have always wanted to return to a Nikon product. After I lost my Canon, I switched to Nikon again.

This is a great camera. It's light and the most compact 35mm SLR camera I have seen. One can choose between fully manual mode (great for complete creative control) or fully automated mode (for the point and shoot crowd). The N55 also has shutter-priority and aperature priority modes as well as special settings for close-up shots, landscape shots, and sports shots--to name a few.

It is a very versatile camera, focuses sharply and quickly, and is a great-looking SLR. I get compliments on the pictures I take with it, but would recommend Kodak film only!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great beginner SLR camera, February 5, 2006
By Scott Perez "Jovian9" (Bloomington, IN United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this camera to learn how to take great pics. This camera is definitely worth it. Especially for the price it sells for nowadays (I paid nearly $300 for mine when I got it). The N55 takes great shots and is easy to learn on. After using this camera I feel I am ready to upgrade in the near future.
There are problems with this camera that Nikon has acknowledged. After 3 years of using this camera (I think) my camera is exhibiting these autofocus problems. Go to this link if you are having an issue and Nikon will fix your camera for free, or refund you if you've already had this problem fixed and paid for it:
