Great, but also consider the Nikon Trailblazer, June 10, 2011
This review is from: NIKON 10X25 REALTREE OUTDOORS (Electronics)
Pros
- 10x power
- image quality seems better than the $15-35 models
- small, compact
- light weight
- camo doesn't get as hot as black finish models
- 2 lens caps
- strap
- bag
- 25 year warranty
- an additional "No Fault" warranty
Cons
- Not waterproof
- Not anti-fog
- Only 2 lens caps
- What! The bag isn't camo?!!!
- The limitations of physics and optics associated with 10x 25mm binoculars
I ordered these after a different brand of low-end binoculars I bought at a big retail sports store fell apart in the store's parking lot (diopter eye cup came unglued, fell off, seems to be a common problem).
The Sportstar 8230 image quality seems to be pretty good and Nikon seems to be one of the few manufacturers that publish brightness measurements for their low end binoculars.
10x 25mm is going to have a limited field of view. The alternative is something bigger and heavier.
Instructions are generic, covering all Nikon models and a separate sheet with the 8230 specifications.
High quality Realtree camo covers most, but not all of the binoculars. Hopefully, the forest wildlife won't tease me about the non-camo, black carry bag with belt loop or the needless and goofy "Outdoors" gel logo/button.
I would have preferred four lens caps. I'll bet Nikon provides lens caps for the front and back of their rifle scopes. But to Nikon's credit, I don't think many manufactures even provide any lens caps for their low end models.
What was a nice and overlooked surprise was the warranty. Nikon has a 25 warranty on their binoculars and then they have a lifetime no fault warranty where you pay shipping and $10. I think the warranty sounds great, but it isn't well documented. There's an emblem on the outside of the box and that's it. No documentation or details inside. The main Nikon website doesn't mention it either. You'll find details on the Nikon Hunting website. So you might want to print out the documentation as a precaution.
These are great binoculars, but I mistakenly thought the Nikon 8230 binoculars were waterproof and anti-fog. Must have gotten them confused with Nikon Trailblazers, which are waterproof and anti-fog, but the Realtree finish Trailblazers seem hard to find. I'm tempted to trade up to the waterproof Trailblazers, but I'm a little wary of the Trailblazers' "turn and slide eyecups."

Great binoculars, but caps stink!, January 7, 2011
This review is from: NIKON 10X25 REALTREE OUTDOORS (Electronics)
I purchased these for my husband, the "hunter", this Christmas. He really likes them except for the caps that cover the lenses. There is nothing to attach them to the binoculars, so when you take them off you have to be really careful not to lose them. Overall though, the view is great through these!
