... except a major design flaw.
The zooming/focusing motor sound is loudly audible when recording video. If not for this, I'd give this camera a five-star rating.

Putting the mics inside the camera body, come on Nikon - of course it was going to pick up motor sounds.

I am not returning this camera for the unprecedented 42x optical zoom only.
Panasonic Lumix FZ150 is a MUCH better choice - and its mics are actually in the flash popup.

Love this little camera. I have a Nikon D3200 and I'm still learning it's fine points. But I do a lot of hiking and just walking around taking photos, so sometimes a lighter point and shoot, stuck in my pack or purse, just works better. I loved my Kodak P&S with 30x zoom, but it died before my planned trip to the Grand Canyon, so I looked for a replacement. I've learned stuff can happen and when your on the trail you always need a camera back up and backpacking means you need to think about weight. Once we got going and the trail got really step, I stashed my D3200 in my pack and started using the Nikon Coolpix 510 instead. It was a tough hike and hiking out in the snow was challenging but incredibly beautiful. It's the first time there'd been snow on the ground at Phantom Ranch since 1978 and I got great shots of this rare event.
When I was looking at the reviews for the 520 and 530 people were talking about what the newer models no longer had so I just went with the older model. It performed well in the icy wind on the south rim, and through heavy snowfall coming up the trail. It's nice at home too to take pictures of my cats. I love my 3200, I took it for a long walk around Washington DC and got amazing shots. But for me it was too heavy for the trail and a 10 mile hike. I guess my only problem is a need another backup camera.

It's a pretty decent camera but it has some unpolished issues. Works best when left in auto.

After a month of use here is what I've noticed.
Pros:
- Normal family pictures look nice
- Low-light pictures are okay if you steady yourself against a wall or tree. Camera can see better in dim light than I can.
- Has a good feeling in the hand. Grippy. Doesn't feel bubbly like the comparable Sony HX line.
- No extra software required to get the images off the camera.

Whatever:
- Selecting exposure time and aperture are clunky
- Too many options on the top dial
- Menu navigation
- Effects
- GPS takes a few minutes to find satellites. If you need geotags during a shoot don't turn off the camera.

Cons:
- Auto-focus is sub-par for what I expect from a Nikon. Slow and sometimes it can't find focus on close or faraway objects. One-time I put it in infinity mode and it still couldn't focus on the horizon.
- Non-standard USB connector. Bad habit by Nikon across its line.
- The zoom/focus button on the barrel is pretty much useless.
- Manual focus is a pain to use.
- Deleting images takes forever because of multiple button presses for each image
- Can't expose for more than one second unless it's in auto-ISO mode and the ISO selection sucks for weird situations. Strange and annoying. Useless for celestial photography.

Would give 5 stars except for the following- this refurbished camera arrived appearing brand new but the power cord would not plug into the camera. It just seemed jammed. Looked inside the camera's plug in location and noticed the little metal piece was too far towards the center of the slot. Yes I probably could have sent it back but I'd waited so long and was really wanting to use it so my husband stuck the tip of a screwdriver in and bent it back into place and since then it has plugged in just fine. Loving the camera, glad to have paid the cheaper refurbished price, but was disappointed that it came with an issue that, had my husband not been able to fix, would have required the hassle of returning it. Came with 90 day limited warranty.

I am a canon fan, always have been and the way it is going always will be. I bought this camera because of the zoom but I am hugely disappointed in it. I took almost 500 pictures over the course of a week and in over 3/4 of pictures at least one person or items in every shot were blurry beyond being able to use the photo for anything. This was true if I used the zoom or if I didn't use the zoom. I returned the camera and went and bought a canon powershot sx 40 and I am very happy! No blurry pictures with the canon.

all in all the camera is well built , has an amazing zoom , and lots of features. It has the potential to be excellent, but in this day and age, a camera that has such a shoddy autofocus system clear fails! everything else is irrelevant if the pictures are fuzzy, which they often are. furthermore, the manual focus, isn't really manual and this is even more pointless than than nothing at all.

I have had Nikons for the last 25 years, almost without fault, but this one is not up to the usual quality i expect and is now officially my first nikon regret!

I love this camera- the images are so clear. The zoom is absolutely stunning. I have not yet figured out how to do macros since I have only had the camera a few days so will have to report on that later. My biggest regret is that I did not get this two years ago. The spot meter helps to get the right exposure even with very variable light. I could go on and on with more details, but for now- this is an amazing camera at any price, but even more amazing at the price.
The attached un-re-touched photo was taken from about 70 meters away.

Bought for a trip to Africa and was not disappointed. Took excellent pictures and great movies. Used the zoom almost for every photo and movie. I did get 2 extra batteries and a wall charger. Every day used 2 out of the 3 batteries and charged up every night. Two years later still love this camera. Looking at the newer model P520 and like the new view screen configuration better then what this model has.

Great camera for the first year, but died after one year of moderate business use. Will not take a charge, and will not power on.
