I have had this camera for less than a month, but I can tell already it fills my need for a relatively compact digital camera that has most of the features of a SLR. For photography in full daylight, LCD screens can be problematic. This camera's view finder option solves the bright daylight problem as well as photographing moving objects in the telephoto mode. I have been experimenting with its functions and have found that the telephoto (42X) is quite good. The preset options such as Birds is handy to set and shoot. Resolution of photos is impressive. The camera did not come with a case, but there is one listed as an accessory. I do not have it. There appear to be threads on the lens, but I am not aware of the availability of filters. A back up battery direct from Nikon was not listed as available at this time. Overall, this is a very good camera and very versatile.

After several compact cameras demonstrated that, for me, their shortcomings overshadowed their convenience, I went looking for something a bit better. Although DSLR appeals to me, my photographic skills and use do not justify it. The Coolpix looked to be a viable alternative, and the price was right. The camera has delivered good quality photos for me on several long trips and even worked out OK in getting good shots of a lunar eclipse.

The things I wish it could do are less significant to most people. First, the auto focus is pretty good, but often cannot make a decision. Single point focus and multipoint focus both have their failings. Consequently, there were way too many shots at dusk on the Grand Canal that ended up out of focus, regardless of my efforts - even selecting infinity focus. If I'd been able to manually focus the camera, all would have been well. Second, the lens only stops down to f5.9. f16 would be much better, but since this is a mid-range camera, there's only so much one can expect of the lens.

All in all, the camera does a good job of producing decent photos in the hands of this semi-skilled user.

I'm not sure Nikon is really trying in the lower end these days (below DSLR). Back in the mid-2000's when the Digital Rebel was kicking up it's heels it seems Nikon had no clue on how to compete in the lower end of the digital market. Nikon has had some relative hits in the compact market especially the P510.

I had a few Panansonic FZ cameras but abandoned them when the UI was getting long in the tooth and Panasonic was distracted. I've since moved onto M 4/3 cameras and am generally happy. Except when I need some lens reach.

I'm shopping around again for a longer lens small camera. The P510 had alot going for it. The P510 was the breakthrough camera. The P520 was more treading water and has some issues that make the P520 a misstep (battery life, focus hunting for most of the long range, etc.) The P530 added more options like HDR (the flip screen is lost). Sensor resolution went back under 16mp which is a good thing (the MP wars are silly, see below). But if you check on shapshort, the P530 scores much lower than P520. In short, Nikon is treading water here and, in light of everything else in the industry, is loosing ground overall. The P530 feels like they have run out of ideas. Yes there is a resculpting on the body, it seems more aerodynamic and cooler. The video is passable but seems a little jittery/unpolished. There is some focus hunting going on in both stills and video at the long range which is not uncommon among superzooms. Images overall also seem a bit flat/compressed, more so than with P510/P520.

If you are already in the P510/P520 line, there is little reason to upgrade here. In fact there is little reason for most camera sites to do a full review on this camera. It's just this years model of mostly the same, not much innovation.

No way, no how. This camera is the less-featured cousin (less tele range, no wifi) to the P600 (which I recently got for my wife.) I love most of the features, the wide range of zoom (even though focusing at the tele end is very slow). The images you get are top notch. Excellent quality. I won't get into the trade-offs (which exist) of the single lens mega-wide-to-super-zoom. Still, the images are great. What really bugs me (after being a professional advertising photographer for over 4 decades) is the fact that Nikon, the be-all and end-all in what's right about cameras and optics, designs a large piece of glass on the end of this camera with absolutely no way to attach a filter... a UV isn't just for filtering out UV, as we all know. It's for protecting the GLASS. The guts of a great camera isn't the camera itself--it's the lens.

Stand out in the rain and take pics? A bit windy and dusty? An errant finger aims its greasy finger toward the lens? Well, with THIS camera, the lens IS the one that's going to get the dust, rain, dirt and smears. The more this happens, the more you actually have to clean the lens ITSELF. Even an errant, jerky motion replacing the lens cap can scratch a lens. The more you touch a lens, the more it will eventually develop minute scratches and then flare, hazing and the like.

We also have the P600--as I mentioned--which I managed (very carefully) to thread on a thin profile 52mm UV filter. It -just- made it. (even though it too is not designed to accept a filter) This p530 is another story entirely. You cannot thread a filter into the lens "threads" In fact, when you look closely, they are really not threads--just parallel ridges. For what purpose? Who knows. It would have cost Nikon a few more pennies to put actual filter threads on these cameras.
