5.0 out of 5 stars Almost a year later and it is still my favorite camera., September 24, 2008

This review is from: Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR [Vibration Reduction] DX Nikkor Zoom Lens Outfit (Electronics)
I purchased this camera to replace another ageing digital camera that I had been shooting venues with for several years. The D300 is every bit as nice as all the reviews rave. I was hesitant to buy it since I had some Canon glass, but in the end I decided it was more worth it to start over and I couldn't have been more pleased. The D300 is a remarkable tool with incredible functionality, ergonomics, and a very logical menu layout. I picked up the camera with the 18-200mm kit lens and even though this isn't considdered a "professional" lens, I find myself using it more than some of my other glass. It is difinitly the lens I keep on the camera for general use as it has greater functionality, lighter weight, and a relatively compact size, which makes it an ideal compromise for most non-studio applications.
Nikon has since released the D700 (which is basically a full-frame D300) but for half the price I have to admit I would still buy the D300. I miss the wide-angle ability of a full frame, but I honestly use the additional telephoto effect far more often.
Looking back I was hesitant, but knowing what I know now, I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
